antenna mount options for a sedan — what are you guys using

 Loading...

so i finally picked up a used FT-7900R and i want to get it properly installed in my Camry but im kind of stuck on the antenna situation. the car is leased so i cant drill anything and the trunk lip mounts i keep seeing people talk about seem like they might not give the best ground plane. ive been looking at the mag mount route but i dont know, seems kind of janky for a permanent-ish install. does anyone run a through-glass NMO or something like that? i mostly just want to work the local repeaters on 2m and 440, nothing crazy. just dont want to compromise the radio performance too much or scratch up the car

trunk lip mounts actually work pretty decent in my experience, had one on my old civic for about two years with a Larsen NMO and it was fine for local repeater work. the ground plane isnt ideal but honestly for just hitting repeaters in your area you probably wont even notice. just make sure you get a good quality mount and run the coax through the door seal or weather stripping carefully so it doesnt pinch. the through-glass options work too but i found the loss adds up if youre trying to hit anything more than maybe 30 miles out.

I've got a similar setup in my leased Accord, been using a mag mount on the roof for almost a year now and honestly no complaints. I know people say mag mounts are temporary but if you get a good one with a quality cable and dont move it around it just kinda lives there. Mine's been through carwashes and everything. I did put a thin piece of rubber mat under it just in case. For 2m and 70cm hitting local stuff it works perfectly fine. The FT-7900 is a solid radio by the way, you'll enjoy it.
