first time trying to check into a net — kind of lost on the whole process

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech, just passed my general last week actually) and i keep hearing people talk about checking into nets but i honestly have no idea how it works in practice. like i get the basic idea, you listen for the net control and say your callsign, but theres so much i dont know. do you have to be a member of whatever club runs it or can anyone just check in? and what do you even say after net control acknowledges you, do you just say your name and location or is there like a specific format people expect?

i found what looks like a weekly HF net on 40m that meets tuesday evenings and i really want to try it but i dont want to make a fool of myself on my first attempt. also theres apparently some special event station operating this weekend for some anniversary and i saw people mentioning it in another thread — is checking into a special event different from a regular net or is it more like just making a contact with that station?

sorry if these are dumb questions, just trying to figure it all out

not dumb questions at all, everyone goes through this. for most open nets you absolutely dont need to be a member of anything, just listen for the net control to call for check-ins and then just say your callsign phonetically, like "Whiskey 4 Tango Foxtrot" or whatever yours is. thats really it for the initial check-in. net control will acknowledge you and usually ask if you have traffic or just checking in, and you just say "no traffic, just a check-in" or something like that. then youre in the net and they might come back to you later if it's a roundtable style or you might just be logged and thats the end of it depending on the net format.

the special event station thing is a bit different — thats really just a regular QSO with a station that has a special callsign, like W1AW or one of those 1x1 callsigns they issue for events. you call them, they give you a quick exchange, you log it, sometimes you can send in for a certificate or award. its not really a "net" in the traditional sense, more like a pileup situation depending on how popular the event is.

just jump in on that tuesday net, worst case you stumble over your callsign and everyone will just chuckle and move on, they were all new once

yeah what he said about nets is right. i was terrified my first check-in too and honestly it was so anticlimactic, net control just said my call back and moved on lol. one thing i'd add is listen to the whole net at least once before you try to check in if you can, just so you get a feel for how that particular net runs because they all have slightly different vibes and formats. some are pretty formal with a net preamble and everything, some are super casual. the 40m ones i've been on tend to be friendly to newer ops.

oh and for what its worth i just worked that special event station you mentioned i think, the one for the lighthouse anniversary? signal was great here in the midwest, got my contact in the log and theyre supposed to send out a QSL card if you submit online. totally different from a net though yeah, just a quick exchange and done.
