solar flux been crazy lately — anyone else getting weird propagation?

so ive been noticing for the past few weeks that 10m and 12m have been doing some really strange things. like some days ill be calling CQ and getting absolutely nothing, then the next afternoon out of nowhere ill work 15 or 20 stations in europe and south america back to back before the band just... dies again. its like someone flipped a switch.

checked the solar flux index and its been bouncing around a lot, somewhere in the 150s to 180s range depending on the day, but the K index has also been spiking up randomly which i think is killing things when it goes above 3 or 4. im still pretty new to understanding all this honestly. been licensed about 18 months now and i feel like i sort of get the basics of how solar activity affects HF but the day to day variation still throws me off.

is there a good resource or tool people actually use to predict when a band is going to open up? ive tried a couple different sites but i cant always tell which numbers to pay attention to. appreciate any help

yeah the flux has been all over the place this solar cycle, cycle 25 has actually been way more active than most predictions said it would be which is great news for HF ops. the thing about 10m is its just genuinely fickle even when conditions look good on paper. high flux doesnt automatically mean a band opening, you also need the geometry to work out — like the path between you and wherever youre trying to work needs to have enough ionization at the right layer and at the right time of day.

for tools i basically live on DXMaps.com to see where spots are coming in real time, and i check the NOAA space weather site for the actual flux and K index numbers. there's also a site called voacap online that lets you model predicted propagation paths which is pretty useful once you get the hang of entering your setup info. honestly though after a while you start to just get a feel for it. if youre seeing spots from europe on the cluster in the morning on 10m, drop what youre doing and get on because it might not last long.

same thing happened to me last tuesday, i was just about to give up on 10m completely and then i randomly heard a ZL station coming in like he was next door. worked him, then a JA, then a couple VKs all within like 20 minutes and then it was gone. total grey line magic i think but honestly i dont fully understand why it happened when it did either so you're not alone lol

i started following W6LEN on one of the facebook groups and he posts daily propagation summaries that are actually written in plain english which helps me a lot more than just staring at numbers
