FT-7900 mount location driving me crazy

 Loading...

so ive been trying to figure out the best spot to mount my FT-7900 in my 2018 F-150 and honestly its been kind of a nightmare. i originally had it under the seat with a remote head but the cable routing was a mess and i kept catching my foot on it. moved it to the center console area but now the display is hard to see when its sunny.

currently thinking about one of those RAM mount solutions off the side of the center console but im worried about it being in the way during normal driving. anyone done something similar in a newer F-150 or really any truck with that big center console? also the mic cord always ends up dangling everywhere no matter what i do

oh and the antenna situation is separate headache — got a mag mount NMO on the roof for now but eventually want to do a proper hole mount, just not ready to drill yet

I had almost the exact same problem in my Tacoma with a 7900. What finally worked for me was a wedge mount bracket that sits between the seat and the center console — feeds the head unit cables down through there cleanly and the control head ends up right at arm level. Not sure if the F-150 console geometry would allow it but worth measuring. The mic cord thing I just gave up fighting and got a coiled replacement mic cord, keeps it from going everywhere.

On the antenna, honestly just drill it. I put it off for two years and finally did it and it took like 20 minutes and the performance difference over the mag mount was noticeable, especially on weaker signals. Just get a good grommet and seal it well and youll be fine.

RAM mounts are solid, i have one on my jeep for my 5100 and no complaints. just make sure you get the right ball size for the weight of your radio head, i grabbed the wrong one initially and it kept slowly drooping down over bumps which was super annoying lol. also depending on where exactly you mount it check that it doesnt interfere with your airbag deployment zones, not trying to scare you just something i had to look up when i did mine
