anyone else do the tuesday night 2m net regularly? wondering about check-in procedures

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last tuesday. the Tuesday Traffic Net on our regional repeater. anyway i was super nervous and honestly kind of fumbled my callsign the first time the net control called for check-ins but the NCS guy was really patient and had me repeat it and everything went fine after that.

my question is mostly about the procedure stuff — like do you always wait for net control to acknowledge you before you give your full call, or is there a standard way nets handle late check-ins? i checked in during the general check-ins window but i saw on the club website there was something about mobile check-ins and traffic check-ins being separate. wasnt sure if i missed something or if that just didnt apply to me since i had no traffic.

also curious how often people here participate in nets regularly. i feel like its good practice for me to actually talk on the radio instead of just listening but i never know if im doing it quite right

Hey don't sweat it at all, everyone fumbles their first few check-ins and the net control ops have heard it all before. Most voice nets I've been on handle late check-ins by just waiting for a pause and then keying up with something like your callsign and the word "late" or "mobile" depending on your situation. The NCS will usually work you in.

As for the traffic vs general check-in thing — yeah that can be confusing at first. If you dont have any formal NTS traffic to pass you just check in as a casual or listener check-in, some nets call them different things. You definitely didn't do anything wrong. The fact that you got in there and did it is the whole point honestly. Some guys I know been licensed 10 years and never once checked into a net so you're already ahead of the curve there.

yeah same boat here when i started lol, i actually wrote my callsign on a sticky note and put it on the radio the first few times because i kept blanking when it was my turn. nets are great practice though. there's also a bunch of special event stations that do net-style operations during things like Field Day or the Thirteen Colonies event in July if you want something a little more exciting to aim for once you get comfortable with the basic check-in stuff
