new to nets — feeling kind of lost on what i'm supposed to do

 Loading...

so i finally got my technician about three weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m repeater net on thursday nights. everyone seems to know exactly what to do and when to do it and i feel like if i tried to check in i would mess everything up somehow. like the net control guy goes through everything so fast and people just say their callsign and sometimes a number or something and its all very quick.

ive been reading a bit online but i cant really find a clear explanation of what youre supposed to say when you check in and whether there are like rules about when you can talk or if you have to wait to be called on. also one time somebody said QRZ after check-ins were done and i have no idea what that was about. is there a good way to just kind of ease into this or should i just go for it and probably sound dumb the first time

oh man i remember feeling exactly the same way my first few months. honestly just jump in. the worst that happens is net control asks you to repeat yourself and thats genuinely not a big deal, they deal with new folks all the time and most net controls are pretty patient about it.

for a typical check-in you usually just say your callsign once clearly when they ask for check-ins, or sometimes twice phonetically depending on the net. some nets ask if you have traffic (meaning a message to pass) or if you have anything for the group, but if you dont just say your call and maybe your name and location and thats it. the QRZ thing means someone is asking whos calling or waiting — its basically like saying who else is out there. dont overthink it. just listen for a few more weeks if you want, but honestly one of the elmers on the net will probably help you out if you just explain youre new when you check in. most hams love a new face on the air

i checked into my first net like two months ago and yeah it was terrifying lol but honestly nobody cared that i fumbled it a little. i just said my callsign when there was a pause and net control came back to me right away. just do it, you'll feel way less nervous after the first time
