kind of embarrassed to ask this but when do you actually jump into a net?

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed for about 4 months now and i check into the local 2m net pretty regularly but theres a whole bunch of stuff i still feel like im doing wrong or at least not doing the way everyone else does it. like when the net control asks for check-ins and i give my call, sometimes i hear other people say their call AND their name AND their location all at once and other times people just say their call sign and thats it. i never know which one to do so i usually just say my call and then feel awkward.

also whats the deal with traffic nets vs just a regular ragchew net — are the procedures pretty different? the club guys at the meeting said i should try to get on one but i didnt want to ask too many questions and look dumb in front of everyone lol. also is there a wrong time to just break in with a comment or should i always wait to be called on by net control? i feel like i broke in at a weird moment last week and nobody said anything but it felt off.

dont be embarrassed at all, everyone goes through this and honestly the net control folks have seen it all. the check-in format really does vary by net — some NCS operators ask for call, name, and location all in one go, others just want your call and then they'll ask for info if they need it. best thing to do is listen to a few check-ins before yours and just match what everyone else is doing. if youre still not sure, call sign only is always safe and the NCS will prompt you if they want more.

on the breaking in thing — yeah generally in a formal net you want to wait until NCS opens it up for comments or asks if there are any stations with traffic. just jumping in mid-conversation can throw things off, especially on a traffic net where theyre trying to move messages efficiently. ragchew nets are way more relaxed about it though. traffic nets have a pretty specific flow — check in, pass your traffic when called, sign out. its not hard once you see it a couple times but it can feel stiff at first.

so anyway i was exactly the same way when i started checking into nets, felt like everyone had a secret manual i hadn't read. one thing that helped me was just asking the net control after the net closed if i did anything weird — most of them are super happy to chat and give you pointers. the good ones want new people to feel welcome and stick around.
