about to take my technician exam, any advice? kind of nervous

 Loading...

so ive been studying for about 3 weeks now and my exam is scheduled for next saturday. mostly been using hamstudy.org and going through the question pool over and over but i still feel like im not totally confident on some of the electrical stuff, like the math formulas and ohms law type questions. i understand the concepts mostly but when they put it in a question format it throws me off sometimes.

also not really sure what to expect at the actual exam session, like do i need to bring anything specific? i looked it up and saw something about 2 forms of ID but one post said something different so now im not sure. and is it multiple choice the whole way through or are there other kinds of questions mixed in

anyway if anyone has tips that would be great, especially for the electrical stuff since thats where i keep getting tripped up on the practice tests

the exam is all multiple choice, 35 questions and you need 26 right to pass. bring a government ID and honestly just one form is usually fine but two doesnt hurt. some VE teams are strict about it and some arent, just have both ready to be safe. also bring a non-programmable calculator if you want but honestly the math on the tech exam isnt that bad, most of it you can do in your head once you see the pattern.

for ohms law just remember the triangle — V on top, I and R on the bottom. cover up whichever one you want and the remaining two show you the formula. sounds dumb but it works. and honestly after a few practice tests the questions start repeating themselves and you just kind of recognize them. hamstudy is great, i used it too. if youre consistently scoring above 80% on the practice exams you should be fine, the real thing is usually easier because you arent nervous about the time.

good luck, youll probably do better than you think

i took mine like two months ago and was also really nervous about the electrical questions lol. what helped me was just doing the practice tests on hamstudy in exam mode instead of study mode so it felt more like the real thing. by the end i had seen most of the questions so many times i just knew the answers without even having to think about them too hard.

the actual session was pretty low key, the VE volunteers were all really friendly and it didnt feel scary at all once i got there. i passed with a few questions to spare so just trust the process i guess
