using DXwatch and QRZ spotting together — am i doing this right?

 Loading...

so ive been trying to get into DX chasing a bit more seriously lately and someone at my club mentioned using cluster spots to find activity. i set up an account on QRZ a while back and i see theres a logbook and all that but i wasnt really using it much. then i found DXwatch and honestly its a bit overwhelming at first with all the spots flying by.

my question is basically — is there a good way to use both of these together or do most people just pick one? i downloaded a couple apps too, Ham Radio Deluxe has some cluster integration i think, and ive seen people mention DX Toolkit but im not sure if thats still being updated. mostly i just want to be able to see when something rare pops up on 20 or 17 meters without having to stare at a screen all day. is there some kind of alert system or am i overthinking this

yeah DXwatch can feel like drinking from a firehose when you first open it, totally normal. what most guys i know do is filter by band and mode right from the start so youre not seeing every VE3 spotting another VE3 on 40m phone or whatever. if you set it to just show 20 and 17 meters it gets way more manageable.

for alerts, there's a site called DX Alert and also the DXLab Suite has a thing called SpotCollector which is honestly really solid if you dont mind the old school interface. it can pop up a notification when something matching your needs-list shows up. i think Club Log also does something similar if you have your log linked up. QRZ spotting is fine but in my experience DXwatch pulls from more nodes so the coverage is better, especially for pacific and asia stuff in the early morning hours.

im pretty new to this too so take this with a grain of salt but i started using the HamAlert website a few months ago and its been great for exactly what your describing. you can set it up to send you a push notification or email when a specific callsign or DXCC entity gets spotted on whatever band you want. caught a couple good ones that way without having to watch the cluster nonstop. its free as far as i know, or at least the basic version is
