Best methods to start learning Morse code from absolute zero?

I'm a newly licensed Tech and want to learn CW to get on 15m and 20m. Completely new to Morse code - never touched it before. What's the most effective way to start from scratch? Should I use apps, online trainers, books, or find a local Elmer? Also, how long does it realistically take to get to a usable speed for QSOs?

Learn the code by its sound - avoid mnemonic methods like the plague! Use the Farnsworth Method with letters at your target speed (say 18-20 WPM) but spacing slowed down to give thinking time. Start with LCWO.net or MorseCode.World for structured lessons. You'll be making contacts within 3-6 months with consistent daily practice.

Start with the Morse Mania App - it turns learning into an engaging game that makes the process enjoyable and effective. Also consider CWops CW Academy - it's free with no obligation and offers group lessons with experienced mentors. The structured approach really helps beginners build a solid foundation.

The basic methods are Koch's method and Farnsworth timing. I'd add: practice sending too! Most people find sending easier than receiving - use tools like CW Checker or VBand to practice with immediate feedback. Don't wait until perfect - get on the air early for real experience. The community is very patient with new CW ops.
