when do you actually check in vs just listen on a net?

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and i still get a little anxious about nets. like i understand the basics, net control calls for check-ins, you say your callsign, got it. but what about those times where you tune in late or youre not sure if the net is still going? do you just wait for a pause and try to check in or is that rude? i did it once and the net control kind of just skipped over me and i wasnt sure if i did something wrong or if he just didnt hear me.

also whats the deal with joining a net just to listen — is that totally fine or do some nets expect everyone who's listening to check in? feels like there are unwritten rules nobody explains and the license exam definitely didnt cover any of this.

totally normal to feel that way, i was the same way for a good year after getting my ticket. so the short answer is yeah you can absolutely just listen without checking in, thats perfectly fine on pretty much any open net. nobody's going to track you down for lurking.

if you tune in late and want to check in, best practice is to wait until net control specifically asks for late check-ins or additional traffic — most nets do this at least once partway through. if you just key up in the middle of someone else's transmission thats where it gets awkward. and if he missed you it was probably just a propagation thing or he had a pile of calls coming in at once, dont take it personally. happened to me plenty of times. just try again next time, net controls are usually pretty patient with newer folks especially on the local stuff.

yeah what he said. also some nets have a specific format where they take check-ins by region or by license class or whatever, so if you dont know the net's format it can feel random. i'd suggest just listening for a few sessions before you try to check in so you get a feel for how that particular net runs. they're all a little different honestly.
