SSB audio quality - what actually makes a difference vs what's just snake oil

 Loading...

so ive been going down a rabbit hole lately trying to get my SSB audio sounding better and honestly the amount of conflicting advice out there is kind of overwhelming. been licensed about 4 years, running an IC-7300 with the stock mic right now, and people keep telling me different things about processing levels, mic gain, compression, all that stuff.

did a lot of A/B listening on my own signal using a second receiver and i gotta say the difference between settings is way more noticeable than i expected. had my mic gain cranked too high for probably the first couple years and had no idea. someone finally told me my audio sounded 'thick' on 40m and i went and checked and sure enough ALC was pinned basically the whole time i was talking.

so i guess my question is what do you guys actually find makes the biggest real-world difference for intelligibility on SSB, not just for rag chewing but also for when band conditions get rough. is the built in compression on the 7300 actually useful or is it just adding distortion? and does mic choice really matter that much or is it more about the settings?

ALC pinning is such a common thing and youre right that most people dont even know it's happening. the rule of thumb i always heard is set your mic gain so ALC just barely moves on voice peaks, not sustaining. once it's riding the ALC limiter constantly you're already generating splatter and your audio is getting clipped hard.

as for the built in compression on the 7300, it's actually not bad when used conservatively. i run mine around 4-5 out of 8 or whatever the scale is and it does genuinely help average power on SSB without turning everything into mush. go too high and yeah it sounds processed and harsh, especially on crowded band conditions where it all blurs together anyway.

mic choice matters but maybe not as much as people think relative to the gain staging. i switched from the stock HM-207 to an SM-50 desk mic and it did clean things up noticeably, more presence in the midrange, but if your levels were set wrong before they're still gonna be wrong. get the gain structure right first then worry about the mic.

yeah the compression thing is something i had to learn the hard way too, ran way too much on my old 746 and people kept saying i sounded like i was underwater on DX contacts. turns out i had the TX monitor off so i couldnt even hear what i was putting out.

one thing nobody really talks about is room acoustics and mic technique, like how far you are from the mic and what angle you're at. i moved my mic like 6 inches further away and aimed it slightly off axis and my audio cleaned up noticeably even with the same exact settings. the 7300 manual actually has a little section on this that i totally ignored for the first year i owned the radio, go figure.

also if you havent already, get someone on the air you trust to give you honest feedback while you're actually adjusting things in real time. the websdr thing works in a pinch but it's not quite the same as a real contact telling you you sound thin or boomy or whatever.
