antenna mount for dual band mobile — what are you guys using?

 Loading...

so i finally picked up a used FT-7900R and im trying to figure out the best way to mount an antenna on my car. its a 2019 honda civic hatchback so there's no real flat trunk lid, the roof curves pretty sharply toward the back and i dont have a truck or SUV to work with. ive been reading about lip mounts and mag mounts and honestly im going back and forth on this.

the mag mount that came with a cheap baofeng i have works fine for testing but i know its not ideal for a real mobile setup. i was thinking about a NMO mount but im not sure i want to drill into the car, its still under warranty and my wife would kill me. anyone run a good hatch lip mount on a similar setup? also wondering if the feedline routing matters much for a VHF/UHF install, like does it have to be kept away from other wiring or is that more of an HF thing

i had almost the exact same situation a couple years back with a civic sedan, close enough. ended up going with a trunk lip mount and honestly it works really well. the key is getting one with a good solid clamp and not one of those flimsy cheap ones that wobbles. the Diamond brand ones have been solid for me. you lose a tiny bit of signal compared to a true ground plane in the center of a roof but for 2m and 70cm you really wont notice it in daily use.

as for the feedline, for VHF/UHF you dont need to stress about it as much as HF but still try to route it away from the ECU and the dash wiring if you can, just good practice. run it through the door seal or down through the trunk interior rather than bundling it near anything that might cause RFI. the FT-7900 is a solid radio btw, good choice

just get the mag mount and dont overthink it honestly, i ran one for like two years before i bothered with a permanent mount and it was fine. if you park inside overnight just pull it off and toss it in the back seat
