trying to figure out where to even start with getting licensed

 Loading...

ok so ive been lurking on this site for a while and i finally decided i want to actually get my license but i honestly dont even know where to begin. like i looked up the FCC stuff and it was kind of overwhelming. someone at work has a ham license and he mentioned something about technician being the first one to get but beyond that i have no idea what im doing

is there like a standard way people study for this? i downloaded some app but im not sure if thats enough or if i need to buy a book or take a class or what. also how hard is the test actually, im decent with electronics but not an engineer or anything. and how do i even find where to take the test when im ready

the technician exam really isnt that bad, dont stress too much about it. the question pool is public so youre literally studying from the exact same questions that will be on the test. HamStudy.org is probably the most popular free resource and a lot of people pass just using that. the Gordon West book is good too if you want something more structured and want to actually understand the material instead of just memorizing answers

for finding a test session, go to arrl.org and they have a exam session finder where you type in your zip code. a lot of clubs do sessions pretty regularly and some even do online proctored exams now through groups like ARRL VEC or W5YI. once you find a session just show up with your ID and like 15 bucks, they handle everything else. the test is 35 questions and you need 26 right to pass. most people who study for even a few weeks get through it fine

i passed mine about four months ago, studied maybe three weeks using just the hamStudy app on my phone during lunch breaks at work. felt like i was barely ready but ended up getting like 32 out of 35 which surprised me. the electrical stuff was the part i was most worried about but honestly a lot of the questions are more about rules and regulations than actual circuit theory so dont overthink it

one thing i wish someone told me is to also start reading about what you actually want to do with the license while your studying, like whether youre interested in repeaters and local stuff or HF eventually or emergency comms or whatever, just helps keep the motivation up when you hit the boring parts about band plans and frequencies
