first time checking into a net and i totally froze up — any tips?

 Loading...

so i finally got my technician last month and ive been listening to the local 2m repeater net on tuesday nights for a few weeks now. last night i actually tried to check in and when the net control called for check-ins i keyed up and just... blanked. said my callsign wrong, stumbled over it, probably sounded like an idiot. net control was super nice about it but i still felt embarrassed.

is there like a standard way you're supposed to check in? i noticed some people just say their callsign and others give their name and location too. and whats the deal with when you want to pass traffic vs just checking in to say youre there? i dont really understand the difference between a directed net and a casual ragchew net either. any help appreciated, been lurking here for a while and everyone seems really knowledgeable

oh man dont worry about it at all, literally everyone does this the first time. i fumbled my callsign on my very first check-in and the net control just asked me to repeat it, no big deal. the thing is net control has heard it all and they genuinely want new people checking in.

for most local nets the format is pretty simple — when they open it up for check-ins you just key up, wait a half second so your radio actually opens the repeater, then say your callsign phonetically if it helps. some nets want name and location too, just listen to what other people are doing for the first few weeks and copy that format. a directed net is more structured where you go through net control to talk to someone else, casual ones are basically just a roundtable. your net probably has a preamble at the start that explains which type it is if you catch the whole thing from the beginning.

yeah same thing happened to me lol. honestly the freezing up thing goes away fast, after like 3 or 4 check-ins it starts feeling totally normal. one thing that helped me was just writing my callsign and name on a sticky note next to the radio so i had something to look at. sounds dumb but when youre nervous your brain just goes blank and having it written down helps. also dont worry about passing traffic until you understand whats going on, just check in as "no traffic" or however your net handles it and thats totally fine
