first ARES activation coming up and honestly not sure what to expect

 Loading...

so i passed my general last spring and joined our county ARES group back in August. been going to the monthly nets and one tabletop exercise but this weekend is my first actual activation — local marathon with like 4000 runners and they want amateur radio support at the aid stations and finish line for medical coordination.

my EC told me to bring my HT and a spare battery and show up at the staging area by 0630 but i dont really know what the actual flow looks like once things get going. like do i just sit there and wait for something to happen or is there constant chatter on the net? and what if i hear something i dont know how to handle? i dont want to freeze up and have someone not get help because i messed up a relay.

any tips from people whove done these public service events before would be great. im a little nervous honestly

the marathon thing is actually one of the best first activations you can do because it's pretty low stakes most of the time. 90% of it is just checking in periodically, confirming your aid station is good, maybe reporting a runner who looks rough to net control. the net control op handles all the coordination — you're basically just ears and mouth at your location.

biggest thing i'd say is don't be afraid to ask for a repeat if you miss something. better to say "net control please repeat" than to guess at what they said. nobody's going to give you a hard time for that, especially on your first time out. and bring snacks, bring water, bring a chair if you can. sometimes the medical stuff happens in the first hour and then you're just sitting there until the last runner comes through which could be 4 or 5 hours depending on the event.

you'll do fine. the fact that you're thinking about this stuff beforehand already puts you ahead of some folks who just show up without even knowing what frequency they're on.

yeah what he said. also make sure you have the net control's callsign written down somewhere and the primary and any backup frequencies — dont rely on memory when you're standing out in the cold at 0630. i keep a little laminated card in my go bag with all of that plus the phonetic alphabet even though i know it by heart now, just a habit from my first few years doing RACES events.

oh and one thing nobody told me early on — when in doubt, just say your callsign and stand by. dont step on traffic trying to figure out what to do. net control will come back to you.
