using DXwatch and QRZ spotting together - am i doing this right?

 Loading...

so ive been playing around with the cluster spotting stuff online for a few weeks now and im still not totally sure im getting the most out of it. basically i use DXwatch and the QRZ logbook together and sometimes i see a spot on DXwatch but then by the time i tune to that freq the station is either gone or buried in a pileup. im assuming theres some lag built in to these web clusters vs using a direct telnet connection but i dont really know how much we're talking about here.

also on QRZ i noticed there's spots showing up right in the logbook page which is kind of handy but i cant figure out if those are pulling from the same network or something different. anybody use both regularly and have a workflow that actually works? feels like im always a step behind everyone else who seems to find these DX stations way faster than me.

yeah the web-based clusters do have a bit of lag compared to connecting directly via telnet, it's not huge but when you're chasing something rare even 30-60 seconds matters. most people who are serious about it run something like DX4WIN or just a straight telnet session to a nearby cluster node. AR-Cluster or CC Cluster nodes you can find a list on the web pretty easy.

the QRZ spots are pulling from the same general DX cluster network as near as i can tell, they just display it in a nicer way. honestly for casual chasing the web tools are fine but if you keep missing stuff it might be worth setting up a telnet connection through your logging software, most of them support it. i use Log4OM and just have it connected all the time in the background, spots pop up right on the bandmap which is really the killer feature imo.

im kind of in the same boat as you actually, just got my general a few months ago and been trying to figure all this out. one thing that helped me was the pskreporter site which isnt exactly the same thing but you can see whos hearing who in realtime which is pretty cool for figuring out if a band is even open before you start hunting around. not sure if that helps with the lag problem but its another tool to have open i guess
