trying to figure out where to even start with getting licensed

 Loading...

ok so ive been interested in ham radio for like two years now but keep putting off actually doing anything about it. my neighbor has a big antenna setup and got me curious. i guess my question is just... where do you even start? like do i need to study a lot or is the technician test pretty easy to pass if you just look stuff over for a bit. i found some website called hamstudy or something like that but wasnt sure if thats the right resource or if there are better ones. also is there anything that trips people up on the test that i should pay extra attention to

hamstudy.org is honestly the one i tell everybody to use, just grind the practice tests on there until youre consistently hitting 85% or above and youll be fine on the real thing. the question pool is public so everythig on the actual test comes from those same questions word for word. some people also like the ARRL technician book if you want actual explanations behind the concepts but for just passing the test the practice questions alone will get you there for most people.

the stuff that trips up beginners is usually the math questions involving things like ohms law and calculating frequency from wavelength, but theres really only a handful of them and they follow the same formulas every time so if you just memorize how to do those two or three types of calculations youre covered. electrical safety questions show up a fair bit too. give yourself maybe two or three weeks of casual studying and youll be ready, its not a brutal exam at all.

i literally just passed my tech exam last month so maybe i can help from the fresh perspective lol. i used hamstudy too and also watched some youtube videos from a guy called Ham Radio Crash Course, that helped me understand the why behind some of the answers instead of just memorizing. took me about 2.5 weeks studying maybe 20-30 mins a night.

honestly the hardest part for me wasnt even the studying it was finding a test session nearby. look up the ARRL exam search or hamstudys own session finder, a lot of clubs do them on weekends. some are even remote now if thats easier for you. once you find a session just sign up and go, dont overthink it
