confused about the vanity callsign process — is it really just a lottery?

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and im still sitting on my sequential call which is fine but its kind of long and i was curious about applying for a vanity call. i looked at the FCC ULS stuff and honestly it was a little overwhelming. i understand you submit an application and there's like a window period where other people can also apply for the same call, and then it's not exactly first come first served? i thought you just picked one and paid the fee and got it but apparently its more complicated than that.

anyway my question is mostly around the timing. if i apply for a callsign and somebody else applies for the same one during that window, how does the FCC actually decide who gets it? is it random or do they prioritize certain license classes or something. i vaguely remember reading something about extra class getting preference but i'm only general so i'm wondering if i should even bother trying for a 1x2 or 2x1 call or if those will always go to extras.

also does anyone know how long the whole process takes these days? i've heard anywhere from a couple weeks to like 2 months and i dont really know what to expect.

yeah the window system trips up a lot of people, its not a lottery exactly but it kind of feels like one. basically when you apply there's a 18 day filing window and anyone else who wants that same call can throw their hat in during that time. after the window closes the FCC looks at all the applications and there IS a priority order — extras do get first crack at certain call formats, and then generals and techs for others. so a 1x2 like W1AB is going to be pretty competitive if it's available and extras will generally beat you to it if they apply. a 2x2 or 1x3 format might be more realistic for a general depending on what district you're in.

timing wise in my experience it's been running a few weeks to maybe a month but i've seen people wait longer if there's a conflict or if the FCC has a backlog. the AE7Q website is your best friend for this stuff, he has tools that show you all the applications in queue for a specific call and you can see exactly what's pending. way easier than trying to parse the ULS directly.

went through this last year when I upgraded to Extra and grabbed a 1x2 call. the ae7q site that the other guy mentioned is really the go-to, i basically lived on it for a few weeks while i was searching for available calls i actually liked. one thing i'll add is don't get too attached to any specific call before you check how much activity it has had — some calls that look available have actually been held or are in some weird limbo state and you wont realize until you dig into it. also worth knowing that the $35 fee is nonrefundable so if you apply for something and lose the window draw you're out that money and have to apply again for something else. not a huge deal but something to keep in mind if your on a budget.
