First WWFF activation coming up, any tips before I head out?

 Loading...

So ive been reading about WWFF for a few months now and finally decided to just do it. Theres a state forest about 20 minutes from my house that has a KFF reference number and as far as I can tell nobody has activated it in over a year, maybe longer. Im planning to go out this weekend with my KX2 and a linked dipole, probably just set up on a picnic table near the trailhead if the weather holds.

My main questions are pretty basic I think -- do I need to spot myself on the WWFF spotting network before I start calling or can I just get on frequency and start? And does the 44 QSO minimum for a valid activation apply to each band separately or is it just the total across all bands and modes? I read the rules page twice and I thought it said total but then I saw someone in a youtube video say something about 44 per band which confused me.

Also not sure if logging with HAMRS is fine for this or if I need to use something specific afterward when I upload to the WWFF database. Any advice appreciated, pretty nervous about the whole thing honestly.

44 QSOs total across the whole activation, not per band -- you definitely dont need to hit 44 on each band, that would be brutal for some references especially the harder to reach ones. Some activators log 44 and pack up, others stay for hours and rack up 200+ contacts, totally up to you.

Spot yourself for sure, it makes a massive difference. Put yourself on the WWFF spotter page and also throw a spot on DX Summit or POTA spots if you want since a lot of hunters watch both. Dont wait until youre already set up and calling CQ for 20 minutes with nothing, just spot first thing. Your callsign, the KFF reference, frequency and mode and youll have a pileup pretty fast on a weekend morning.

HAMRS works fine, just export the ADIF afterward and upload it through the WWFF logbook portal. Ive done it a dozen times that way no issues. Have fun out there, first activation is always a good time even if something goes sideways with the antenna.

oh and dont stress too much about being perfect on the first one -- I did my first KFF activation last spring and completely forgot to log the reference number in the notes field for like the first 15 contacts and had to go back and edit everything later in ADIF master. it worked out fine but just double check your logging setup before you start calling CQ haha. also if you have a phone signal out there the wwff spotter site works on mobile which is handy for checking if anyone else is already on a close frequency
