trying to pick my first HT, overwhelmed by options

 Loading...

so i just passed my technician exam last week and im trying to figure out what handheld to get. everyone seems to have an opinion and honestly its a lot. ive been looking at the Baofeng UV-5R because its cheap and everyone seems to have one, but then people on reddit are saying get a Yaesu or Kenwood and dont bother with the cheap stuff. i dont even know what i need it for yet, i just want something to listen around on and maybe hit the local repeater once i get my call sign sorted.

the price difference is pretty wild too. like the baofeng is $25 but then some of these Yaesu HTs are $200+. is the quality difference really that big for someone just starting out? i dont want to spend a ton if im not sure ill stick with it but i also dont want to buy garbage. any advice appreciated, sorry if this has been asked a million times

Congrats on passing the exam, welcome to the hobby. Honestly for where you're at right now the Baofeng will do the job fine. Yeah the receiver isnt as clean as a Yaesu and the transmit audio can be a little rough but for hitting a local repeater and getting your feet wet you wont notice most of that. The programming software is a bit of a headache at first but theres tons of guides out there.

That said if you think youre gonna stick with this and you want something that just works without fussing around, the Yaesu FT-65 is usually around $70-80 and its a massive step up in terms of build quality and receiver sensitivity. I started with a UV-5R years ago and within about 6 months I was wishing I'd just spent the extra money upfront. But thats just me, plenty of people run Baofengs for years and love em.

i was in the same spot like 8 months ago lol. ended up getting the baofeng just to have something and it works fine for what it is. only thing id say is get the programming cable with it, trying to program it by hand from the keypad is honestly awful. chirp is free and once you figure it out you can load all the local repeaters in like 10 minutes.
