first WWFF activation went better than expected, few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state forest near me, KFF-something i pulled off the website. i had been meaning to try this for ages after seeing a few posts here about it and honestly it was a great excuse to get outside with the radio for a few hours.

i set up my KX3 with a random wire thrown up in a tree, worked about 30 contacts on 40m before the band kind of died on me and then picked up a few more on 20. got my 44 which i know is the minimum to log it as a valid activation which felt good.

couple things im not sure about though — do i need to submit my log anywhere specific for WWFF or does it just go through ADIF upload to the main site? also i saw something about getting the reference validated or confirmed, is that automatic or does someone review it? and one more thing, the reference i used was listed on the Flora Fauna website but i couldnt find much info about the specific park boundary so i kind of guessed. is there a better way to check the actual boundaries before heading out

congrats on the first one, 44 in a session is solid especially on just 40 and 20. for the log submission you upload your ADIF directly to the wwff.cc site, theres a log submission section in your account area once you register your callsign. it usually gets processed within a day or two and youll see your activation show up on the stats page. the validation isnt really a manual review thing in my experience, as long as your log has the 44 minimum and the reference number is right it goes through fine.

for the park boundaries question — i usually cross reference with the official government website for whatever agency manages the land, like if its a state forest i look it up on the state forestry dept site and they usually have a PDF map or sometimes even a GIS layer. some of the WWFF references also have a notes field on the wwff.cc listing that mentions the managing agency. honestly for most activations if youre clearly inside the named forest youre fine, they arent going to come after you for being 50 meters off on a boundary line.

nice work getting out there. i did my first one earlier this year and was also confused about the log thing for a while. one thing i didnt realize at first is that you should also spot yourself on the WWFF spotter or pota spots or whatever while youre actually activating so hunters can find you in real time, makes getting to 44 a lot easier than just calling CQ into the void. i didnt do that my first time and it took way longer than it needed to lol
