first WWFF activation — what am I missing before heading out

 Loading...

so I've been doing POTA for about a year now and someone at our club mentioned WWFF last month and i finally looked into it properly this week. seems like a really cool program and theres actually a designated nature reserve about 20 minutes from my house that has a WWFF reference (KFF I think? or maybe it's the international one, still figuring out the numbering system tbh).

anyway im planning my first activation for next saturday, planning to run SSB on 40m with maybe some 20m if conditions look decent. I've done maybe 30 POTA activations so the operating side doesn't scare me too much but WWFF seems to have some different rules around the logging and submission process and im not totally sure how it all works. do i need to pre-announce it somewhere specific, or can i just show up and operate and submit the log after? also is the 44 QSO requirement real or did i misread that

any tips from folks who've done both POTA and WWFF would be really appreciated, especially if theres anything that tripped you up the first time

yeah the 44 QSO thing is real, that's what you need for a full activation credit on the WWFF side. it sounds like a lot compared to POTA's 10 but honestly on 40m SSB with a decent antenna you'll blow past it, especially on a weekend. the pileups for WWFF refs that dont get activated much can get pretty decent.

for pre-announcing, you dont HAVE to but most people post to the WWFF reflector or use the spotting tools ahead of time — it really helps get hunters tuned in. also make sure you're logging the WWFF reference number correctly in your log, not just the park name. i made that mistake my first time and had to go back and edit like 80 entries. the reference format for US refs is KFF- followed by a four digit number if i remember right.

sounds like you've got the basics down already though honestly the hardest part is just finding a spot in the park where you can actually hear anything, some of those nature reserves are in valleys or have a lot of tree cover that makes antenna work interesting

im in the same boat as you pretty much — did my first WWFF activation like two months ago after doing POTA for a while. the log submission part confused me more than the operating honestly. i used ADIF and uploaded to the WWFF logbook system but it took me a couple tries to get the format right. there's a guide on the wwff.us site that helped a lot once i actually sat down and read it properly lol

one thing nobody told me was that you should double check if your reference is active in the WWFF database before you go, a few refs i looked at were listed but not fully registered yet or something. the 44 QSOs went fine for me once i got spotted on the DX cluster
