new to nets, felt kinda lost my first time — what am I missing?

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last Tuesday and honestly it was a little overwhelming. i knew the basics, like when the net control calls for check-ins you give your callsign, but i wasn't sure about the timing. like how long do you wait after someone finishes talking before you key up? i jumped in a couple times and i think i doubled with someone but i couldn't really tell. also is it normal to just say your callsign once or do you say it phonetically? the net control guy was super nice but the whole thing moved fast and i felt like everyone else just knew what they were doing automatically.

also at the end when they asked if anyone had announcements i wanted to mention a hamfest coming up but i chickened out lol. do you just key up and say you have an announcement or do you wait to be called on? nobody really explained that part. been licensed about 4 months now (general) so im not brand new but nets are a whole different thing than just ragchewing on a repeater

Totally normal to feel that way your first few times, dont sweat it. The timing thing gets easier — most people wait about a second after the squelch tail drops before keying up, just enough to make sure the other person is really done. doubling happens to everyone, even guys who've been doing this for decades, especially on busy repeaters.

For phonetics it kind of depends on the net. Some nets are pretty casual and a quick callsign is fine, others are more formal and they expect full phonetics every time. just follow what the net control does and you'll fit right in. and yeah for announcements you usually just key up when they ask and say something like "W1XYZ, I have an announcement" and wait for them to acknowledge you before you go ahead. you'll get the hang of it fast, the first few check-ins are always the weirdest part

im basically in the same boat as you, checked into my first net like two months ago and yeah it felt like everyone had some secret script i didn't have. one thing that helped me was just listning to the net a few times before actually checking in, so i could hear how people were timing it and what the net control expected. also some nets post their procedures on a club website which i didn't know was a thing until someone here mentioned it
