confused about QSL cards vs LoTW vs eQSL — do i need all of them?

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed for about 4 months now and i keep seeing people talk about QSL cards and LoTW and eQSL and honestly im not sure i understand what any of them are actually for or if i need to use all of them or just pick one. like is one of them "the" standard that everyone uses or is it just personal preference?

i made my first few contacts last week on 40m SSB and the other station said something about LoTW and i just kind of nodded along (well, said 73 and moved on) but i have no idea if i was supposed to do something after the contact. do i need to upload a log file or mail a card or both? and if i want to eventually work toward DXCC or WAS do i need all three or just LoTW?

sorry if this is a really basic question, theres just so much to figure out when youre starting out

Not a dumb question at all, this stuff confused me too when I first got started. So basically here's the deal — LoTW (Logbook of the World) is run by the ARRL and it's what you need for most of the big awards like DXCC and WAS. You upload your log to their system, the other station uploads theirs, and when both logs match it counts as a confirmed contact. No physical card needed. It does take a bit of setup because you have to get a digital certificate from ARRL but it's worth doing early.

eQSL is a separate system that a lot of people use, it's easier to sign up for and some folks like it for the little digital card images you get, but it's not accepted for DXCC so if that's your goal it's kind of secondary. Still fun to collect though.

Physical cards are totally optional these days but some people really love them, especially for rare DX contacts or when you work someone in a new country. Some awards programs still accept them and honestly theres something nice about getting a card in the mail even if it takes months sometimes. I'd say get LoTW set up first and then decide if you want to bother with the others.

yeah what he said, LoTW is the main one to worry about if awards matter to you. i personally use all three just because why not, it doesn't take much extra effort once your logging software is set up to auto-upload. i use Log4OM and it handles LoTW and eQSL uploads pretty automatically after a contact which is nice.

one thing i'll add — some DX stations especially from rarer entities only do paper QSL cards either direct or through a bureau, so if you ever work someone really exotic dont assume LoTW will cover it. always worth checking the DX station's QRZ page to see what they accept. i've had contacts that never confirmed on LoTW just because the other op never uploaded their log, which is frustrating when it's a new country for you
