when do you actually key up during a net check-in? i keep second guessing myself

 Loading...

ok so ive been checking into the tuesday night local 2m net for a few weeks now and i still feel like im doing something wrong with my timing. the net control will say something like "any further check-ins" and i never know if i should just say my callsign right away or wait a beat or what. last week i jumped in at the same time as another guy and we both stepped on each other which was embarrassing. he was nice about it but still.

also how do you handle it when net control asks for traffic and you have something to pass but its not really important, like i wanted to mention a club meeting but i wasnt sure if that counted as "traffic" or if that was only for like formal messages. i dont want to waste everyones time but i also dont want to not say something when i should. anyone been through this learning curve

the timing thing trips up pretty much everyone when they first start checking into nets, dont feel bad about it at all. what usually works for me is waiting until net control finishes their full sentence and then leaves a noticeable pause before keying up. like they need to actually release their PTT and the repeater tail needs to drop or at least start to drop. if you jump in the moment you hear them stop talking you're probably going to collide with someone else who did the same thing.

for the traffic question, honestly that depends on the net. some nets are pretty loose and "announcements" or club news absolutely counts as passing traffic, especially informal local nets. the more formal ARRL style nets are more strict about what counts as a radiogram versus general announcements. i'd just listen to how other people handle it for a few more weeks. if you hear others saying things like "i have an announcement for the club" and net control just rolls with it, you're probably fine doing the same. if in doubt you can always ask net control directly after the net closes, most of them are happy to chat about procedure stuff off-net.

yeah i was in the exact same boat a few months ago, stepping on people is basically a rite of passage haha. one thing that helped me was actually just saying my callsign kind of slow and clearly instead of rushing it out. that way even if two of you key up at once, net control can sometimes still catch one of the calls. and honestly net control has heard it all before, they're not going to be annoyed.
