trying to pick my first HT, overwhelmed by options

 Loading...

so i just passed my technician exam last week (finally) and now im trying to figure out what handheld to get. i went down a rabbit hole on youtube and now im more confused than before i started. everyone seems to have a strong opinion and half the time they contradict each other.

from what i can tell my main options are something like the Baofeng UV-5R which is like 25 bucks and everyone either loves or hates, or stepping up to something like a Yaesu FT-60 or maybe the VX-6R, or going all in on an Icom or Kenwood which seem to cost way more. i mostly want to hit the local repeaters and maybe do some APRS stuff eventually. i dont really need anything fancy i just want something that works reliably without a ton of frustration.

is the price difference actually worth it on the name brand radios or am i just paying for a logo at that point? genuinely not sure what to do here

congrats on the ticket. honestly this comes up a lot and theres no single right answer but ill tell you what i usually tell new hams -- the Baofeng will work and you can definitely hit repeaters with it, but the programming is kind of a pain and the receive is pretty noisy compared to the Japanese radios. if budget is tight its fine to start with, just get CHIRP and dont try to program it manually or youll lose your mind.

that said if you can stretch to an FT-60 i think most people dont regret it. its built like a tank, the audio is noticeably better, and it just works the way a radio should work. ive had mine for maybe 8 years and dropped it more times than i want to admit. still going strong. the VX-6R is also waterproof which is nice if youre ever operating outdoors in sketchy weather. Kenwood TH-D74 is amazing if you want APRS built in but thats probably overkill for where you are right now.

start simple, get on the repeaters, and youll figure out pretty quick what features actually matter to you

i was in the exact same spot about two years ago and ended up going with the UV-5R just to have something while i figured things out. used it for maybe 6 months and then got a Kenwood TH-K20A when it went on sale and the difference was pretty noticeable tbh. not saying the baofeng is terrible but once you use a radio with good audio and a sensible menu system you kinda dont want to go back

one thing nobody mentioned to me when i started -- whatever you get, buy a better antenna. the rubber ducks that come with these things are pretty mediocre and a nagoya or diamond antenna makes a real difference especially if your local repeater isnt super close
