when do you actually use phonetics vs just saying the letter

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i still feel kinda awkward with phonetics on air. like i know NATO phonetics — alpha bravo charlie etc — but i never know when its actually required vs when its just a habit thing people do. sometimes ill hear someone just say their callsign letters normally and other times everyone is spelling everything out phonetically and i dont want to sound like i dont know what im doing either way

also is it bad form to use non-standard phonetics? i heard a guy use "America" for A the other day instead of Alpha and nobody said anything but it seemed weird to me. is that a thing people do or was he just making stuff up

There's no rule that says you have to use phonetics every time, it's really just a clarity thing. If the band is quiet and conditions are good, saying your callsign straight is totally fine. Where phonetics really matter is when there's QRM, weak signal, or you're working someone who might not have English as their first language — that's when NATO phonetics earn their keep because both parties already know the system.

As for non-standard phonetics, yeah people do it, especially on local repeaters where everyone knows each other and it's more casual. But if you're doing any kind of formal traffic net or working DX, stick to NATO. The whole point is that the words were chosen because they're distinct even through heavy distortion. "America" and "Alpha" both start with A but Alpha is less likely to get confused with something else in a pile-up. Honestly just default to NATO and you'll never go wrong, and eventually it just comes out automatically without even thinking about it.

yeah the non-standard thing drives me a little crazy not gonna lie, ive heard people use all kinds of random words and half the time its fine but then you get someone who says something like "norway" for N and "nicaragua" for N and you're just like... pick one. the whole reason NATO phonetics exist is so everyone's using the same system and theres no ambiguity. on HF especially when youre dealing with a station thats barely above the noise floor, hearing "november" vs some random word can genuinely make a difference

that said dont stress too much about it on local VHF stuff, nobody really cares that much there
