using dxwatch and QRZ cluster for the first time — kinda confused

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and just started getting into DX chasing. a buddy told me to check out DXwatch and the cluster on QRZ but honestly im a little lost on how to actually use it. like i can see spots coming in but i dont really know what im supposed to do with them or how fast i need to move.

do people just sit there refreshing and then run to their radio whenever something shows up? and is there a way to filter by band because right now its just a firehose of spots and i cant tell whats relevant to my situation. im running a basic HF setup, nothing fancy, so not everything i see is actually workable for me anyway.

also saw something about DX Sherpa and a couple android apps that can do cluster alerts — are those worth messing with or is the web interface good enough for most people

haha yeah the cluster can be overwhelming at first, totally get it. what i do is use the filter on DXwatch to just show the bands im actually on — if youre mostly on 20m then just filter to that and suddenly it gets way more manageable. same thing on QRZ cluster, theres a band filter dropdown thats easy to miss.

as for how fast you need to move, it depends. sometimes a spot is valid for 20-30 minutes, sometimes the station is gone in 3 minutes flat if theyre running a pileup. you kind of develop a feel for it. rare ones go fast, more common DX you can take your time. i usually keep a browser tab open and just glance at it while im already at the radio rather than sitting there waiting.

for apps, i really like DX Toolkit on android, gives you push notifications when something shows up that matches your filters which is way better than refreshing. havent used DX Sherpa personally but ive heard good things.

one thing nobody told me when i started was that not every spot is accurate. sometimes someone spots a frequency wrong, or the callsign is off, or the dx station already qsy'd by the time you get there. so dont get too frustrated if you tune to a spot and hear nothing or something completely different — just part of the game. the cluster is a tool not gospel lol
