when do you actually ID on a busy net? getting confused

 Loading...

ok so ive been checking into the local tuesday night net for about 3 months now and i keep second guessing myself on the ID rules. i know the FCC says every 10 minutes and at the end of a transmission but like... on a net when the NCS is moving through check-ins pretty fast, do you ID every single time you respond or just at the end when youre done talking? i asked one of the guys at the club and he said just follow what the net control says but that doesnt really answer my question because sometimes NCS moves so fast i barely have time to say my callsign let alone do a full ID.

also related i guess -- when someone finishes their traffic and says QNI or whatever, is it rude to ask a question right after or do you wait for NCS to open the floor? i dont want to be that guy who steps on people but i also dont want to miss my chance to ask something if its relevant to the net topic. been lurking more than participating honestly because im not sure of the proper flow. any advice appreciated, still very much learning the ropes here

Yeah the 10 minute rule can feel a little murky in a net context, totally get the confusion. The way I've always understood it is your callsign IS your ID -- so when NCS calls for check-ins and you say your call, that counts. You dont need to do a formal "this is W4XYZ signing off" every single transmission as long as youre giving your call. The FCC rule is basically just making sure you identify at least once every 10 minutes and at the end of a contact, and in a structured net your check-in and any response to NCS usually handles that naturally.

The floor thing really does depend on the net. Some nets are very structured and you should absolutely wait for NCS to recognize you before jumping in. Others are more casual and a quick "W4XYZ with a question" after someone finishes is fine. I'd watch the pattern for a few weeks and you'll start to feel when it's ok to speak up. Honestly the fact that you're thinking about this stuff means youre already doing better than half the people who just kerchunk the repeater without identifying at all lol

i had the exact same question when i started checking into nets, dont feel bad. what helped me was just listening to the net for like 2 or 3 sessions without even checking in, just to get a feel for how that particular net runs. every net has its own kind of culture i guess. the NCS on our wednesday net is pretty strict but the sunday morning one is really chill and people chat a bit between traffic passes. just jump in when it feels right and if you mess up the NCS will usually just gently correct you, nobody bites
