first POTA activation went better than expected, few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from me, K-4822 if anyone's familiar with it. i was pretty nervous honestly because ive read so many posts about people struggling to get their 10 contacts and i only had about 2 hours before i had to leave.

ended up running 20m with my KX2 and a linked dipole i threw up between two trees, maybe 20 feet high in the middle. got 23 QSOs in about 90 minutes which i was really happy with. most of the hunters found me pretty quick after i spotted myself on the POTA app.

anyway my questions are kind of scattered. first, is it worth calling CQ for a while before spotting yourself, or just spot right away? i waited maybe 10 minutes and only got 2 calls so i spotted and then it went crazy busy. also is there any etiquette around how long you stay on a frequency once you've been spotted? felt a little rude just QSYing but i was getting QRM from somewhere around 14.245 and needed to move. and last thing — do most people log in real time with an app or just paper and upload later? i was using paper and it felt a bit chaotic trying to write and talk at the same time.

congrats on the first activation, 23 contacts is a solid start especially with only 2 hours. to answer your spotting question, yeah most activators just spot themselves right away these days, theres no real reason to wait unless youre trying to practice running a pileup blind i guess. the hunters are watching the spots constantly and youll just be burning time otherwise.

for the QSY thing thats totally fine, just toss out a quick 'QSYing up 5' or whatever before you move and most people will follow you. the hunters using the app will see if you respot on the new freq. nobody expects you to stay planted on a frequency thats getting hammered.

logging wise i know plenty of people who swear by paper and upload to the POTA site later using ADIF, its really not a big deal. i use Hamlog on my phone when conditions let me but honestly a paper log and a quiet moment in the car on the drive home works fine too. the important thing is you got it done and activated the park, everything else is just workflow stuff you'll figure out as you go.

oh man i remember my first activation, i also waited too long to spot myself and just sat there calling CQ into the void lol. spot early is definitely the move.

one thing i'll add that nobody told me until my like 4th or 5th activation — if you can, try to get on a frequency thats already somewhat clear before you spot, because once that spot goes out you get a pretty immediate pileup and if theres already someone nearby on the band you'll have a bad time. i learned that the hard way at a park in michigan last fall, had a net running like 3 kHz down and i had no idea until people started complaining.
