first WWFF activation - what am i getting myself into

 Loading...

so ive been doing POTA for about a year and a half now and i keep seeing people mention WWFF in the same breath, sometimes people are logging for both at the same time which i didnt even know you could do. finally looked it up properly last week and found out theres a whole separate reference system for nature areas, national forests, wildlife refuges, that kind of thing.

anyway i live pretty close to a national wildlife refuge that apparently has a WWFF reference assigned to it already, and im thinking about doing an activation there sometime this month. my question is mostly about the logging side of things - do i need to use a specific logger or can i just use whatever i normally use for POTA and upload separately? and is there a minimum contact count same as POTA or different? i know i should probably just read the rules on the website but the documentation is a little scattered and id rather hear from someone whos actually done it

also curious if the pileups are similar or if WWFF spotting is a lot quieter. feels like every time i get spotted on pota the frequency turns into chaos for a few minutes which is fun but exhausting

yeah you can absolutely log for both at the same time, lots of people do that, especially if the area qualifies under both programs which happens more than you'd think with national forests and refuges. the threshold for WWFF is 44 contacts to count as a valid activation, not 10 like POTA, so you do have to put in a bit more work. some activators find that a little daunting at first but honestly if you're already comfortable running a pileup you'll get there.

for logging i use HAMRS for field stuff and it exports adif just fine, then i upload to the WWFF logbook portal separately from whatever i do with pota. a few guys i know use Log4OM which can handle both uploads more or less automatically but i havent messed with that myself. the spotting network is definitely quieter than pota overall, the WWFF community is a bit more spread internationally so you get a lot of European chasers which is actually really cool if you're on HF. dont be surprised if you get a pile from DL and PA stations at weird hours

oh man i just did my first one back in the spring and the 44 contact requirement stressed me out way more than it should have lol. ended up with like 67 so it was fine but i spent the whole time convinced i wasnt going to make it. the European chasers thing is real, had a bunch of Germans and Italians in my log which was honestly the coolest part of the whole day. good luck with it, wildlife refuges are usually really nice spots to operate from too
