first time checking into a net — what am I supposed to actually say?

 Loading...

okay so ive been licensed for about three months now (general) and i keep hearing people talk about nets but ive never actually done one. there's a local 2m net on tuesday evenings that a guy at my club mentioned and i figured id try it this week but honestly im not sure what the procedure is. like do i just say my callsign? do i wait for someone to call for check-ins? is there like a specific format or will i sound like an idiot if i just wing it?

also i noticed on the ARRL site there's a list of HF nets too and some of them say things like "directed net" vs "round table" and i dont really know what that means either. any help appreciated, kind of nervous about it honestly

Don't stress about it, honestly directed nets are pretty straightforward once you've heard one go by. The net control station (NCS) will open the net and ask for check-ins, that's your cue — you just transmit your callsign clearly and wait. They'll acknowledge you, maybe ask if you have traffic or just log you as a check-in, and that's basically it. You don't have to say anything fancy.

A directed net means NCS controls who talks and when, so you don't just jump in whenever. Round table is more like a casual conversation where people just take turns. The tuesday evening local ones are usually pretty relaxed and the NCS folks have heard every new ham stumble through their first check-in, they genuinely don't mind. Just give your call phonetically if you're nervous about it being heard clearly and you'll be fine.

oh man i was in the exact same spot like six months ago lol. i just listened to the net for a couple weeks before i checked in just to get a feel for how it flowed. when i finally did it i literally wrote down what i was going to say on a sticky note beforehand which felt ridiculous but it helped. also there are sometimes special event stations that do nets around holidays and stuff, those can actually be really fun to try once you're comfortable with the basics because they usually have a lot of activity and the NCS tends to be pretty patient
