when do you actually ID on a net? getting confused by what people do vs what the rules say

 Loading...

so ive been checking into a couple of local nets lately and im noticing everyone seems to do things a little differently and im not sure what's actually correct vs just how that particular net does things

like sometimes the net control will ask for check-ins and people just say their callsign once and thats it, but then other times people will say their call, their name, their location, and whether theyre mobile or fixed... is there like a standard for this or does every net just kind of make up their own thing

also the part that really confuses me is the ID requirement. i know the FCC says you have to ID at least every 10 minutes and at the end of a transmission, but on a busy net where you might only say your call once during check-in and then not transmit again for 20-30 minutes while the net is running, does that count? you technically didnt transmit again so there's nothing to ID at the end of, right?

and one more thing -- whats the deal with people who kerchunk the repeater before checking in? is that actually considered bad practice or is it just something people do to make sure theyre hitting the machine

good questions and honestly this trips up a lot of newer folks because you're right that there's a gap between the FCC rules and what actually happens on the air

the short answer on the ID thing is that the 10 minute rule applies to your transmissions. if you check in once and then just listen for the rest of the net, your single check-in transmission covered your ID requirement for that contact. you said your call, you're good. the rule is really designed for situations where you're having an ongoing conversation and need to periodically remind people who you are, not for someone who just pops in once

as for the different check-in formats, yeah every net runs a little differently and that's completely normal. most nets will tell you what they want up front if you listen to the preamble -- the net control usually says something like "give your call, name and location" or just "give your call" and you kinda follow along. if you're not sure just listen to how the first few people check in and mimic that

the kerchunking thing... i mean technically if you key up without identifying yourself that's actually an FCC violation since any intentional transmission needs your call. most people dont think about it that way and just do a quick blip to check the squelch tail, but the proper way is to just say your callsign. nobody's going to come down on you for it but its a habit worth breaking early

yeah what he said about the net preamble is the big thing, i used to stress about this too but once you realize every net kind of has its own culture it makes more sense. the club net i help control on wednesday nights we ask for call and name only because it keeps things moving, but i've been on other nets where the control wants grid square and signal report and the whole thing

honestly just lurk for a few sessions before you check in and you'll pick up the rhythm pretty fast
