first SOTA activation attempt this weekend, a few questions before i go

 Loading...

so i finally picked a summit to do my first activation and im pretty nervous about the whole thing honestly. the peak is W6/NS-306 and its only like a 2 mile hike in so nothing crazy, but ive been going back and forth about gear for weeks now and i think im just overthinking it at this point.

my current plan is to bring my FT-818 with a 3ah lipo, a linked dipole cut for 40 and 20, and just a telescoping fiberglass pole to get it up in the air. i've been practicing setting up the antenna in my backyard and it goes up pretty fast so thats good. im planning to self-spot on SOTAwatch before i leave the trailhead so people know im coming, and then also maybe try to post from the summit if i have signal.

my main questions are really just — do i need to stay in the activation zone the whole time or can i work people from anywhere on the summit? and also is 4 QSOs really all you need to count it as an activation? feels like a low bar but i dont want to stay up there all day if conditions go bad or weather rolls in. also should i bother with CW or just stick to SSB since im more comfortable there, im only like 6 months into my general ticket so cw is still pretty rough for me

any advice appreciated, really want to get this one in the log

yeah 4 QSOs is all you need, thats the official rule and it exists for a reason — sometimes conditions are genuinely terrible and people get skunked even after being up there for two hours. you'll probably get way more than 4 once you're spotted though, chasers jump on activations pretty fast especially on a weekend morning.

the activation zone thing — basically you need to be within 25 vertical meters of the true summit, so as long as youre on the actual summit or close to it you're fine, it only matters if the summit has like a restricted area at the very top and you have to operate from slightly lower down. for most normal summits it's a non issue.

SSB is totally fine, dont stress about CW for your first one. you can always add it later. 40m is going to be your workhorse in the morning before it opens up too much, and 20m gets you the dx chasers if you want. sounds like your kit is solid honestly, the 818 and a linked dipole is like the classic SOTA setup for a reason. good luck, post your report on the reflector after

I did my first activation about a year ago and was nervous too, it ended up being way more fun than I expected. One thing I wish someone had told me — bring more food than you think you need, I got so caught up trying to work stations that I forgot to eat lunch and the hike back was rough lol. Also pre-spotting is smart but also just post again when you're actually set up and ready, sometimes the pre-spot gets buried by the time you're actually on the air and a fresh spot gets the pile going faster.
