getting into contesting for the first time — CQ WW coming up and i have no idea what im doing

 Loading...

so i got my general ticket back in the spring and ive been mostly just ragchewing on 40m and doing some SOTA activations when the weather is nice. a buddy at my club keeps telling me i need to try CQ WW this fall and honestly it sounds fun but also kind of overwhelming

like i get the basic idea, you work as many stations as possible across different zones and you log everything. but i dont really understand the exchange format, like what am i actually supposed to be sending and receiving, and does it matter if i mess it up. also is it worth even getting on with a 100w setup and a wire antenna or is it basically hopeless against all the big gun stations running amps

ive also heard Field Day mentioned a lot and i know thats more of a club event but i missed it this year. is that a better starting point for someone new to contesting or is it just completely different

anyway any advice for a first timer would be really appreciated, especially if someones gone through this same thing

CQ WW was my first real contest too and honestly just jumping in is the best way to learn. the exchange is pretty simple once you do it a few times — for phone you send your signal report (everyone says 59 basically regardless) and your CQ Zone. you can look up what zone you're in before the contest, its usually listed on the contest sponsor page. if you mess up an exchange the other station will just ask you to repeat, nobody's going to yell at you or anything

and dont worry about the 100w and wire thing. you'll be surprised what you can work even without a big station. yeah the M/M contest stations with stacked yagis are doing crazy things but there are plenty of people running modest setups just like you. a dipole or end fed on 40 and 20 will get you in the log. your score wont win any plaques but that isnt really the point your first time through

Field Day is great but its kind of its own thing — more about emergency preparedness and club camaraderie, the scoring is weird with all the bonus points. CQ WW is a more traditional contest experience if you want to learn how contesting actually works. do both eventually but CQ WW phone would be a solid first contest. just fire up N1MM or even just a paper log and go for it

yeah what he said about zones, definitely look that up ahead of time so youre not fumbling around for it mid-qso. one thing i'd add is just spend an hour or two before the contest starts listening to how people are running stations and what the exchange sounds like. you'll pick it up fast

also SOTA and contesting are kind of a fun crossover if you havent thought about it — there are SOTA specific events and some people do SOTA activations during contests to get the portable multiplier or whatever. not sure how that works exactly for CQ WW but worth looking into for Field Day for sure since portable operation scores bonus points
