getting better audio on SSB — what actually makes a difference vs what doesn't

 Loading...

so ive been on SSB for about two years now mostly HF, running an IC-7300 into a pretty decent antenna and for the longest time i just assumed my audio was fine because nobody complained. then i got on a net where the control op actually told me i sounded a little muffled and that kinda sent me down a rabbit hole.

started reading about mic gain, compression, the whole ALC thing and honestly it got confusing fast. like everyone says dont overdrive the ALC but then some guys say a little ALC action is fine and others act like any ALC movement is the end of the world. ive been trying to dial things in by ear but its hard to judge your own transmitted signal obviously.

what i ended up doing was getting a friend on a nearby repeater... wait no that doesnt work for SSB obviously. had a buddy about 30 miles away listen and give me reports while i messed with the settings. dropping mic gain down and letting the speech processor do more of the work seemed to help but im not sure i fully understand why. also the stock mic on the 7300 is supposedly not great but i havent pulled the trigger on anything else yet.

curious what other people have found actually moves the needle on audio quality vs stuff thats kind of overhyped. like does the desk mic really make that big a difference or is it mostly settings?

the ALC thing trips up a lot of people. the way i think about it — ALC is there to protect the finals, not to be your audio leveler. if youre riding it hard constantly youre already clipping before the ALC even kicks in and that sounds terrible on the other end, kind of splashy and distorted. what you want is mic gain set so youre just tickling the ALC on peaks and then if you want to punch through QRM thats where the processor helps, but the processor should be working on clean audio not already-clipped audio.

on the desk mic question honestly yeah it does matter but maybe not as much as the settings. i ran a Heil PR-40 for years and it sounds great but i also know guys with a basic MD-100 who sound fantastic because theyve taken the time to actually set the thing up properly. the 7300 has that bass cut and treble boost option in the menu somewhere — think its under the TX tone settings — and rolling off some of the low end actually helps a lot for voice intelligibility especially in a pile up situation where youre trying to cut through.

the real test is always getting an honest signal report from someone who will actually tell you the truth, not just 59 59 73.

yeah what he said about the processor order mattering is real. i made that mistake for embarrassingly long, had the mic gain cranked because i thought more input = more signal and the processor would sort it out. nope. you end up with garbage in garbage out basically.

one thing that helped me that i dont see mentioned much — monitor your own audio with the 7300s built in monitor function at low volume while youre transmitting. its not perfect but you can hear a rough version of what youre putting out and it makes it a lot easier to catch obvious problems like popping on P's or if youre way too close to the mic. some people hate it because it throws off their rhythm when theyre talking but i got used to it after a while.
