    so ive had my General for about 3 years now and i mostly just do some local repeater stuff and occasionally mess around on 40m SSB when the bands are cooperating. a buddy at the club keeps telling me i should just go ahead and get my Amateur Extra but honestly im not sure the theory stuff is gonna be worth it for what i actually do on the air.
    like i looked at some of the practice questions and some of it is pretty deep — filter design, transmission line theory, all that. i dont really build my own equipment or anything so im wondering if people who went through the Extra exam actually use any of that knowledge day to day or if you just kind of memorize the question pool and forget it after.
    also is the extra portion of the bands actually that much less crowded? someone told me the CW portions arent really usable if you dont do CW which is probably true i guess. just trying to figure out if its worth a few months of study

    honestly when i first got on HF i was SO worried about phonetics and within like a month it just clicked. the main time it actually matters is weak signal stuff or when theres a lot of QRM and someone really needs to copy your call correctly. on a local net on a clear frequency it probably doesnt matter much. but i still always use NATO just out of habit now. also worth noting some DX operators get confused by non-standard phonetics if english isnt their first language because they learned the NATO ones and thats it, so there is a practical reason beyond just rules

    so ive been running a diamond x50 on my roof for a couple years now and its been fine for 2m but i want to add a dedicated 70cm yagi up there, probably a 9 or 11 element, pointing more or less toward the repeater cluster about 22 miles out. the problem is the coax run from the shack to the roof is maybe 55 feet of RG8X that i already have buried in the wall and i really dont want to tear it all out.
    i know RG8X is fine for 2m but 70cm is a different animal and i cant remember what the loss numbers actually are at 440. anyone done this and thought it was acceptable or is it gonna be bad enough that i should just bite the bullet and pull LMR400 through there. the yagi would be doing most of the work obviously but still.

    the digital modes really did change the game for this, youre right about that. back when it was all CW EME you basically needed a serious array and high power just to hear anything back. JT65 and now Q65 have made single yagi operation actually viable, not just theoretically possible.
    for a realistic starter setup on 2m, a single long yagi in the 20-23 element range plus 100w will get you contacts but youre going to be limited to working stations that have big arrays on the other end. if you can bump power to 400w or so it opens up considerably more. the preamp is honestly just as important as power though — a good low noise preamp right at the feedpoint makes a bigger difference than you'd think, youre looking for something under 0.5dB noise figure if you can manage it.
    144.130 is the standard JT65 EME calling frequency, and most people coordinate through the ping jockey logger at dxc.beans.net or the wsjt-x built in logging. you can also just watch the logger and see whos calling. moon rise and moon set windows are when the moon is at a workable elevation for your location so you kind of plan around that. lunac3 or any moon tracking software will help you figure out when to be at the radio.
    dont get discouraged if it takes a few sessions before you get that first contact, there's a real learning curve just figuring out the timing and pointing even before the rf stuff makes sense

    i went from a 7300 to a 7610 and then back to running the 7300 again lol. sold the 7610 to fund an amp and some antenna work and honestly the antenna stuff did more for my operating than the radio upgrade ever did. the 7610 is a nicer radio dont get me wrong but if your shack setup is already sorted and you just want better results on HF, more aluminum in the air will beat a better receiver most days.

    honestly you dont need all three but a lot of us end up using at least two. LoTW is pretty much the gold standard if you care about DXCC or WAS because the ARRL requires it for those awards. eQSL is way more casual and some people love it, some dont bother — i know a bunch of DX stations that only upload to eQSL and skip LoTW entirely which is frustrating when you need that entity confirmed.
    paper cards though, i still send them for anything that feels special. a nice QSO with a rare DX station or a grid square i needed, yeah im printing a card. theres something about getting a physical card in the mail that no digital system replaces. but for everyday contacts on the local repeater or random FT8 stuff, just LoTW is fine. most logging software like WSJT-X or Log4OM can auto-upload to LoTW so after the initial setup you barely think about it.
    since you already got TQSL sorted out youre past the hardest part, seriously that certificate process trips up a lot of new hams.

    so ive been messing around with FO-29 and AO-73 for a few weeks now and the doppler correction is just killing me. im using SDR# with a plugin for doppler on the receive side but my uplink is just a handheld pointed at a yagi which i know isnt ideal but bear with me here. the problem is even when i think im tuned right i can hear myself come back through the transponder way off from where i expect, like sometimes i find myself and then i lose it again before i can even say my callsign properly.
    i tried using gpredict for the tracking data and its pretty decent but syncing the doppler correction to my actual radio while also manually adjusting the uplink is just a lot to juggle. is there a way people usually handle this that isnt a full computerized rig with CAT control? i dont have CAT on my HT obviously lol. also is there a trick to just parking somewhere in the passband and staying put rather than constantly chasing the frequency? i feel like ive seen people mention this somewhere but cant remember where.
    the passes where the max elevation is under like 20 degrees are basically useless for me right now, i think my antenna situation is part of that but still. any tips appreciated, been lurking here for ages and figured id finally just ask.

    yeah this confused me for a while too when i started HF. the short answer is DXwatch, the QRZ spot data, and what logging programs pull from are all basically fed from the same underlying cluster network — the DX Spider network and a few others that all share spots between nodes. so theyre not identical but pretty close, usually within a minute or two of each other.
    what most people end up doing is running something like Log4OM or DXKeeper (free, part of DXLab suite) which connects directly to a telnet cluster node and then flags spots on a bandmap in real time. makes it way easier than tabbing around. for just getting started though honestly DXwatch with the auto-refresh on is fine, dont stress about having the perfect setup right away. the QRZ spot thing at the bottom of callsign pages is usually only a few minutes behind so its decent enough for casual use, its just not as fast as a direct telnet connection would be.
    WSJT-X is kind of its own thing — it can pull from PSKReporter which is specifically for digital weak signal contacts, thats a bit separate from the traditional CW and phone spotting clusters. they dont really talk to each other directly.

    honestly the extra HF segments are worth it alone if you do any serious operating. the 40m extra portion is noticeably less crowded especially during contests when the general portion turns into a zoo. same deal on 80m, that extra 25khz on the low end is where a lot of the good DX parks itself.
    as for the theory — yeah you memorize a lot of it for the test and dont really think about it again unless you get into building stuff or troubleshooting weird antenna behavior. but i actually found studying for it kind of made some things click that i always just sort of handwaved before. like i finally actually understood why my antenna tuner was doing what it was doing. took me about 6 weeks of studying maybe an hour a night using the hamstudy site and i passed first try. the math sections look scarier than they are, most of it is plug and chug with formulas they basically give you the context for.

    the inverted V angle is almost certainly whats pulling your resonant frequency up. when you fold the legs down from horizontal the effective electrical length gets shorter so the antenna acts shorter than it actually is, which pushes resonance higher. its counterintuitive but thats how it works. most people find they need to add a few inches to each leg for an inverted V to get resonance back where they want it, so youre actually in decent shape just needs trimming back toward your target freq.
    the 1.8:1 at 7.150 is honestly fine if your rig can handle it, most modern rigs with internal tuners wont even blink at that. but if you want to get it lower just lengthen both legs by equal amounts, maybe 3-4 inches at a time and recheck. go slow its easier to trim than to add back on.
    the balun question is a real one. without one you can get common mode current running back down the outside of the coax which can mess with your pattern and sometimes cause RF in the shack. a simple 1:1 current balun or even a coax choke (wind 8-10 turns of your coax near the feedpoint) makes a real difference, worth doing even on a basic dipole.

    the ALC thing trips up a lot of people. the way i think about it — ALC is there to protect the finals, not to be your audio leveler. if youre riding it hard constantly youre already clipping before the ALC even kicks in and that sounds terrible on the other end, kind of splashy and distorted. what you want is mic gain set so youre just tickling the ALC on peaks and then if you want to punch through QRM thats where the processor helps, but the processor should be working on clean audio not already-clipped audio.
    on the desk mic question honestly yeah it does matter but maybe not as much as the settings. i ran a Heil PR-40 for years and it sounds great but i also know guys with a basic MD-100 who sound fantastic because theyve taken the time to actually set the thing up properly. the 7300 has that bass cut and treble boost option in the menu somewhere — think its under the TX tone settings — and rolling off some of the low end actually helps a lot for voice intelligibility especially in a pile up situation where youre trying to cut through.
    the real test is always getting an honest signal report from someone who will actually tell you the truth, not just 59 59 73.

    yeah what he said about band edges is the main thing that got me when i was new. i actually did transmit slightly out of band once without realizing it because i thought the dial frequency WAS my frequency, didnt understand the whole carrier vs. where the audio actually sits thing on SSB. nobody said anything but i checked with a more experienced guy later and he pointed it out
    the ARRL band plan chart is probably the most reliable thing to reference, just google that specifically rather than random sites. some of those third party pages haven't been updated since like 2012 and the allocations did change

    i mean i use my 991A for VHF EME stuff through a preamp so thats probably not your situation lol but yeah for straight HF use the 7300 gets recommended constantly for a reason. the touch interface takes maybe a week to get used to and then it feels weird going back to knobs-only rigs. only complaint ive seen from people is the TX audio needs some tweaking out of the box, worth looking up the settings before you get on air with it

    so ive been licensed about 8 months now and just got into chasing DX a little bit, nothing crazy, just trying to work some new countries when i can. somebody at the club mentioned cluster spotting and i downloaded the QRZ app and also bookmarked DXwatch but honestly im kind of confused about how theyre supposed to work together or if you even use both at the same time.
    like right now i have DXwatch open on my laptop and im watching spots roll in, i can see stations getting spotted on various bands, but i dont totally understand the workflow. do i just see a spot, tune to that frequency, and call? is it really that simple? and does the QRZ app talk to the same cluster network or is it pulling from somewhere different. also sometimes i see spots that are like 20-30 minutes old and the station is obviously long gone, is there a way to filter that or is that just how it is sometimes
    not trying to overthink this but i want to make sure im not being that guy who shows up on a frequency and has no idea whats going on lol

    so ive been planning this for about two months now and tomorrow is finally the day. going up W6/CT-067 which isnt a super high pointer but its close enough to drive to the trailhead and the hike isnt too brutal. i've got my KX2 packed with a 20m end fed, planning to run maybe 10 watts, throw the wire up in a tree if theres one up there (i checked the photos and there seem to be some scrubby ones near the summit so fingers crossed).
    my main worry is that ive never actually done an S2S contact before and i kind of want one for the log but i dont know how to find who else might be activating at the same time. do i just check SOTAwatch3 the morning of and look for spots? also is it bad form to self spot if nobodys picking me up on the cluster? i feel like i read conflicting things about that.
    im licensed since last year so still pretty new to all this. any advice appreciated, even the obvious stuff i might be overlooked.
