first POTA activation went better than expected, few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house, been putting it off for months because i kept telling myself i needed more gear or a better antenna or whatever but i just packed up the KX2 and my end fed and drove out there

got 12 QSOs in about 40 minutes which i know is just barely over the minimum but honestly i was pretty happy with it for a first time out. most of the contacts were on 40m SSB, tried 20 but conditions werent great or maybe my signal was just weak, not totally sure which. one guy gave me a 57 which felt pretty good

anyway my questions are — when you're logging in the field do most people just use paper and transcribe later or is there an app people use? i was doing paper and it was fine but a bit messy. also is there a way to announce you're going out ahead of time so hunters know to look for you? i saw something about spotting but im not sure how that works exactly when youre the one activating

congrats on the first one, 12 QSOs is totally solid especially on a first activation. honestly some of my early ones i was just happy to hit 10 and get out of there before the rain hit lol

for logging a lot of people use the HAMRS app, it's free and designed pretty much exactly for POTA. syncs up to the POTA website pretty painlessly when you get home. i used paper for my first few activations and it works fine but HAMRS makes the upload way easier. some folks use Log4OM or just a spreadsheet but HAMRS is probably the most common thing you'll see people mention

for spotting yourself — you can self-spot through the POTA website or app once you're set up and on frequency. there's also the pota.app spots page that hunters watch constantly. a lot of activators will post on their local club facebook or the POTA facebook group the day before to drum up hunters too. once you self-spot you'll usually start getting a small pileup pretty quick, people are almost always listening for new spots to come in

nice work getting out there. i kept making excuses too and finally just went and it was way more fun than i expected. 40m was my bread and butter when i started, 20 can be hit or miss depending on time of day and where youre trying to reach

the spotting thing is a game changer once you figure it out. i was confused about it at first too but basically you just put yourself on the pota spots and hunters see it almost instantly. sometimes youll go from zero calls to a small pile in like 2 minutes which is kind of wild the first time it happens
