so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state wildlife management area near me, been meaning to try it for months and just never got around to it. ended up setting up my KX2 with a linked dipole about 40ft up in a pine tree and ran about 3 hours on 40 and 20m SSB. got maybe 65 QSOs which i think is enough to actually count the reference, pretty stoked about that.

couple things im still fuzzy on though. when i log the activation do i need to submit separately to the WWFF database or does it sync somehow from SOTA or ADIF or whatever? i uploaded to ADIF but not sure if thats all there is to it. also i had a few hunters calling me who mentioned they needed the specific reference number for their logs, i had it written down but wasnt sure if i was supposed to announce it more often on air. felt a bit disorganized on that front.

overall though it was a really good time, way more relaxed than i expected. nobody was rude, the pileup was manageable, the weather cooperated. thinking about doing another one next month at a national wildlife refuge thats maybe an hour from me. anyway just wanted to share and see if anyone has tips on the logging side of things.

congrats on the first one, 65 QSOs is a solid activation especially on your first go. for the logging you'll want to submit your ADIF directly to the WWFF logbook, theres a portal on the main wwff.net site or you can use Fast Log Entry if you like that workflow. it doesnt pull from SOTA or anything like that, completely separate. just make sure your ADIF has the wwff-ref field populated for each QSO otherwise the system will complain.

on the announcing the reference thing, yeah the convention is to say it pretty regularly, like every few QSOs or whenever you ID. something like "this is W1XYZ portable KFF-1234" and hunters really appreciate it because some of them are chasing a lot of references and need to confirm they got the right one. you'll get a feel for the rhythm of it after a few activations. sounds like you did great for a first time though, those wildlife refuges are usually good references to activate if theyre not already done a bunch of times.

oh man i just did my second activation like two weeks ago and had the exact same confusion about the logging. took me forever to figure out the wwff portal honestly. one thing that tripped me up was making sure the date format in my ADIF was right, it rejected my first upload and i couldnt figure out why for like an hour. turned out to be a timezone thing in my logging software. just something to watch out for.
