confused about net check-in procedure, did i do it wrong?

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into a local 2m net last tuesday, been licensed about 4 months now and honestly i was nervous as heck. the net control called for check-ins and i waited for a pause and gave my callsign phonetically like ive seen suggested everywhere. but then the net control came back and asked me to repeat and i got all flustered and kind of stumbled through it again.

afterwards one of the guys on the net messaged me on the club reflector and said i checked in at the wrong time, like there's a specific order you're supposed to wait for? something about mobiles first then portables then fixed stations? i honestly had no idea that was a thing. is this standard across all nets or does each net have its own rules for this kind of stuff. i dont want to step on anyone or come across as rude, just trying to learn the ropes here.

hey dont stress about it too much, everyone does something like that their first few check-ins, net control has heard it all trust me. the mobile/portable/fixed order thing is actually not universal at all — some nets do it that way, especially traffic nets that follow ARRL format, but a lot of casual ragchew or information nets just take check-ins in whatever order they hear them. best thing to do is listen to a full net cycle or two before you jump in so you can get a feel for how that specific net runs. most net controls will also say at the top of the net how they want check-ins done if they have a preference. you did fine, phonetics were the right call, just took a bit of nerves out of the equation next time you know what to expect.

yeah I went through the same thing when I started checking into nets. the one I check into most Tuesdays doesnt do any kind of order thing at all, net control just logs whoever calls. but I did check into an NTS traffic net once and it was way more formal than I expected, they do have a specific sequence and the net control runs it pretty tight. I kind of just stumbled through that one too lol. I think as long as you identified yourself correctly and weren't doubling with someone you're not doing anything wrong, net controls are generally pretty patient with newer hams.
