First WWFF activation went way better than expected - some thoughts

 Loading...

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state forest reference near me, KFF-something i dont remember the exact number off the top of my head, and honestly i was kind of nervous going in because ive done a handful of SOTA activations before but this felt different somehow. like with SOTA you always have that summit pressure and the altitude and scrambling around but with WWFF it was just me setting up a little portable station at a picnic table in the trees and it was honestly really relaxing.

ran about 90 minutes on 40m SSB and picked up a handful of hunters which was cool, a few of them seemed really excited to get the reference logged. i was using my KX3 with a linked dipole thrown up over a branch, nothing fancy. signal reports were pretty decent considering i was basically in a valley.

my question i guess is about the logging afterward — i uploaded to WWFF Logbook but im not sure if i did everything right with the reference tagging. does it matter if the name of the park is spelled exactly right or does it just go by the reference number? also is there any etiquette around spotting yourself vs waiting for a hunter to spot you, i kind of just posted myself on the WWFF spotter and wasnt sure if thats frowned upon

self spotting is totally fine and honestly kind of expected for WWFF, nobody is going to give you grief for that. most hunters are monitoring the spotter page or have it linked to their phone so thats usually the best way to get a pile going. the reference number is what matters for the log, the park name doesnt need to be perfect as long as the KFF or whatever prefix you used is correct and matches the WWFF database. congrats on the first one, 40m SSB in a valley with decent reports sounds like you had a solid setup going

yeah same experience here when i started doing these, the logbook part confused me for a while too. one thing i'll add is make sure you hit at least 44 QSOs if you want the activation to count as a full valid activation for the reference — i think its 44 for most programs but double check the WWFF rules because i may be misremembering. also some of the hunters are really serious about collecting references so youll find the same callsigns popping up over and over once you do a few of these, kind of a fun little community within a community if that makes sense. your setup sounds great for this kind of thing, i keep meaning to try a linked dipole instead of my endfed
