Just got my Tech license - scared to make first contact?

Hi all! Finally passed my Technician exam last week and got my call sign KC1XYZ. Super excited but also pretty nervous about making my first QSO. I've got a Baofeng UV-5R and found the local 2m repeater, but every time I key up to call CQ I chicken out. Any tips for a brand new ham on how to get over the mic fright? What should I say for my first contact?

Congratulations on getting licensed! Don't worry - everyone feels that way at first. Start by just listening for a while to get comfortable with how conversations flow. When you're ready, try something simple like "CQ, CQ, this is KC1XYZ, new ham looking for a first contact." Most ops are super welcoming to new licensees.

I remember that feeling! What helped me was practicing my introduction out loud before keying up. Just say your call sign clearly, mention you're new, and ask for any station. The ham community is really friendly - someone will definitely come back to you. Welcome to the hobby!

Pro tip: Listen to the repeater during commute hours (morning/evening) when it's most active. Jump in with "KC1XYZ monitoring" when there's a lull in conversation. Local hams love helping new folks and will probably ask about your setup and how long you've been licensed. You've got this!
