  1. so ive been running a diamond x50a on the roof for about two years now and lately ive been noticing that my signal reports from the local repeater guys are down maybe 2-3 S units from what they used to be. nothing changed as far as i know, same radio (ft-7900), same coax run which is about 35 feet of LMR-400 going from the shack up through the wall and out to the mast. i re-terminated the PL-259 on the radio end last fall because the old one looked a bit corroded but i just used the same basic silver solder and a random connector from the parts bin. my gut says its probably the coax connection at the antenna itself since i never touched that one and it's been up there through a couple winters. the antenna looks fine visually but i know that doesnt mean much. is it worth pulling the whole thing down to check or should i rule out other stuff first? also wondering if maybe the x50a just has a lifespan and mine is getting tired. these things dont last forever right
  2. im literally in the same boat as you right now lol. started using that LCWO site about six weeks ago and its actually going better than i expected. im on like character 15 of the Koch sequence now which still surprises me. one thing that helped me was just not skipping days even if its only 10 minutes, consistency seems way more important than how long each session is. also dont get discouraged when you plateau because i hit a wall around week 3 and almost quit but pushed through and it clicked after a few more days. good luck with it

RemoteHams has been rock solid for me for basic rig control but i never bothered with the SDR panadapter over the same connection, always seemed like overkill for casual operating. if youre mostly doing HF work the 7300s built in waterfall over the CAT interface is probably good enough anyway. the latency thing on DSL is usually more about jitter than raw bandwidth in my experience, ran into the same headache on a vacation rental setup once and switching the audio codec from PCM to something like Opus made a noticable difference. worth poking around in the RCForb settings if you havent already.
  4. totally get the confusion, i was in the same spot when i first got licensed. here's the short version of how i think about it: LoTW is basically the gold standard if youre chasing awards like DXCC because the ARRL only accepts LoTW or physical cards for that. eQSL is kind of its own thing and a lot of people use it but its not accepted for DXCC. paper cards are the old school way and honestly still fun to get in the mail, some people really love the physical ones. for FT8 specifically, a lot of logging software like WSJT-X can upload directly to LoTW automatically which is really handy. you do have to go through a bit of a setup process to get your LoTW account working — you need to request a certificate and it takes a few days to get sorted. eQSL is way easier to set up immediately if you just want something working fast. as for QSL managers, yeah that's basically someone who handles QSL requests on behalf of a DX station, usually because the DX op is in some remote location or just doesnt want to deal with all the mail themselves. you'd send your card or request to the manager's address instead. most of the time managers only deal with paper cards but some also handle LoTW uploads for the expedition.
  5. so we finally got our ARES group together for a full day tabletop plus actual radio exercise last saturday and honestly i learned more in those 8 hours than i had in months of just reading about emergency comms. figured id share some stuff that surprised me or caught us off guard in case anyone else is planning something similar. the biggest thing that hit me was how fast message traffic gets backed up when you only have two operators handling net control and the simulated 'served agency' keeps changing their mind about what they need. we were running Winlink for formal traffic and voice on the local 2m repeater as backup and at one point the repeater went down (on purpose, they didnt tell us ahead of time) and like half the group just... froze. nobody had confirmed their simplex fallback frequencies before the drill started. that was embarrassing but also really good to find out now and not during an actual event. also found out one of our members had a go-bag that hadnt been touched in two years and his HT battery was completely dead. again, better now than during a real deployment. the whole thing was kind of humbling but in a good way. curious if anyone else has done these kinds of exercises and what caught you off guard
  6. had almost the exact same problem last year, turned out my firewall was blocking VARA from reaching out on the ports it needs for the telnet fallback. winlink tries a few different connection paths and if something is blocked it just silently fails and looks like a radio timeout. worth checking if you have any security software that might be interfering, even windows defender sometimes does weird stuff with new software.
  7. went through basically this exact decision about two years ago. ended up with the RSP1A and honestly for pure receive quality it was a pretty noticeable jump from the v3 dongle, especially on HF. the noise floor is better and the dynamic range makes a real difference when you're trying to pull weak signals out near a strong broadcast station or whatever. SDRuno is a bit clunky to learn but once you figure it out it works fine, or you can just use it with SDR# if you dont want to bother. the HackRF is a different kind of device though. its got 20MHz bandwidth which is great for certain things but its a pretty mediocre receiver compared to the RSP1A at the same price. the transmit thing sounds cool but if you already have a licensed radio setup you probably wont use it as much as you think. if your main goal is better receive performance id go RSP1A without much hesitation.
  8. repeaterbook is what everyone uses, seconding that. also some repeater clubs have their own website with all the info, worth googling the call sign of the repeater trustee if you can find it from the FCC database. one thing i'd add — if you're not sure if you're actually hitting the repeater, try this: key up, say your callsign, then just listen for the courtesy beep or tail. if you hear the repeater's squelch tail or a beep after you unkey, you got in. if you get nothing you either dont have the tone right or youre just not making it in from where you are. happened to me for like two days when i first started, turned out i had the offset backwards lol.
  9. so ive been a general for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the extra. like i know you get the extra spectrum privileges and all that but honestly i dont use half of what i have access to now. the main thing holding me back is the theory sections — the stuff about phase angles and filter design and whatever the smith chart questions are about. i passed my general without really understanding all of it and im worried extra is gonna be a whole other level of that. does anyone actually use the advanced theory stuff in day to day operating or is it mostly just to say you passed the hardest test. genuinely asking because i dont want to spend three months studying for something that doesnt change how i operate at all. though i guess the cw sub-bands thing is appealing if i ever get serious about morse.
  10. oh man yes, happens to me every winter. i get super into it around october when the bands start acting up again and then by february im barely touching the radio. i think its pretty normal honestly. the hobby will wait for you, thats kind of the nice thing about it
  11. so ive been a Tech for about 2 years now and mostly been doing VHF/UHF stuff, some APRS, got my first HT and then a mobile rig, the usual path i guess. but lately ive been really curious about HF and everyone keeps telling me to just get my General and i keep putting it off because honestly the exam just looks intimidating compared to the Tech one. like i looked at the question pool and there's a lot of stuff about propagation and electrical theory that i dont really understand. i passed my Tech by mostly memorizing answers with HamStudy which worked fine but im not sure if that approach works as well for General or if the questions are harder in a way that trips you up more. also someone at my local club said something about needing to know math for the General which kind of scared me off for a bit. anyway i guess my main question is, is it actually worth the time investment and how long did it take you guys to feel ready for the test. and also once you have General what are the HF privileges like, can you actually get on 40m and work DX or is it still pretty limited until you get your Extra
  12. the honest answer is yes and no. the question pool memorization approach will absolutely get you through it, thats just a fact, but some of the calculation questions are tricky because they reword the same concept a few different ways and if you dont have at least a gut feel for what youre doing with like LC circuits or the smith chart stuff you might mix yourself up. i spent about 6 weeks going through the ARRL extra class book and i actually found myself genuinely interested in some of it, the stuff on propagation modes and the emission type breakdowns was stuff i never really thought about before. as for whether it changes your operating — honestly for casual HF work the extra khz thing is a little overhyped but during contests and when bands are crowded it does matter. the 160m and 60m allocations specifically were things i started using more after i upgraded. and theres something psychological about it too, i dont know, you just feel like you understand whats happening a little better when you actually worked through the theory even partially.
  13. dont sleep on just trying a ham-it-up upconverter with your existing rtl-sdr before you spend the money tbh. got me through like another 6 months before i finally caved and got a proper SDR. depends how patient you are i guess. that said once i did move to an RSP1A i was kind of annoyed i waited so long lol, the difference on 40m at night especially was pretty obvious
  14. So ive been messing around with Winlink for about three weeks now and i think i finally understand the basic concept but im still fuzzy on a few things. Running a KX3 into a SignaLink USB and using Winlink Express on a windows 10 laptop. Got my first message through last week via a nearby VHF RMS gateway on 2m which was pretty exciting honestly. My question is more about the gateway side of things. Right now im just connecting to whatever shows up in the frequency list that has decent signal. But i've heard people say you should try HF gateways for anything serious, like actual emcomm use or if the local repeater infrastructure goes down. Tried a couple of the HF ones on 40m with PACTOR but my interface only does VARA HF which apparently is fine? Someone at the club said VARA is basically PACTOR-lite and not all gateways support it. Is that still true or has VARA gotten more widespread. Also — and this is the part that really confuses me — what exactly is a Winlink hybrid network node vs a regular RMS gateway. the documentation is kind of dense and i keep losing track of what connects to what. Do I need to worry about this as an end user or is that more of a gateway operator concern. Thinking long term i might want to run my own RMS relay someday but not sure if thats even worth it given how many are already up.
  15. yeah 40 has been my go-to lately too, usually got it on while im cooking dinner or whatever. heard a couple guys from Tennessee last night going on about antenna stuff for like an hour, didnt mind though it was good background noise lol. the band was surprisingly quiet for a weeknight
