ok so ive been checking into a few local nets lately and im still a little fuzzy on the ID thing. like i know you have to identify every 10 minutes and at the end of a transmission but on a net when the NCS is running things pretty fast, do you ID every single time you come back to answer someone or is just saying your callsign when you check in good enough for a while?

last week i was on the Tuesday night 2m net and someone came back to me after i passed traffic and they were like "please ID" and i felt kinda bad but i honestly wasnt sure if i was doing it wrong or if they were being overly strict about it. the NCS didnt say anything so i dont know who was right. been licensed about 8 months so still figuring out the unwritten stuff too not just the rules in part 97

yeah that can be a little confusing at first, dont stress too much about it. the technical requirement is every 10 minutes AND at the end of your last transmission in an exchange — so if youre just doing quick back and forth on a net and its all happening within a few minutes you dont have to ID every single time. but a lot of nets have their own customs where they like you to lead with your callsign each time you key up just so the NCS and everyone else knows who they're hearing, especially on a busy repeater where signals arent always perfect.

the person who said "please ID" was probably just being a little overzealous or maybe your signal was dropping and they genuinely couldnt catch your call from earlier. i wouldnt take it personally. just make a habit of saying your call when you first key up each transmission and youll never have to worry about it honestly. its good practice anyway even if its not strictly required every time.

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me when i first started joining nets. I just started putting my callsign at the beginning of every transmission out of habit and nobody has ever complained about that haha. better to over-ID than under I guess. also some nets are just way more formal than others, the ARES net in my county is pretty by the book but there's a casual ragchew net i join on thursdays that's way more relaxed about it
