finally put together a go-kit, took way longer than i expected

 Loading...

so i've been meaning to put together a proper go-kit for probably two years now and i finally just sat down last weekend and did it. our ARES group has been nudging everyone to have something ready and honestly i kept putting it off because i didn't know where to start and every time i looked at what other people had built it felt overwhelming.

ended up going with a mid-sized Pelican case i had from a camera thing, threw in my old Yaesu FT-857D, a 40Ah LiFePO4 battery i picked up last year, a SignaLink for digital modes, and some basic coax and connectors. also packed a small notepad and pencil because honestly i've seen people show up to events and not have anything to write on which seems like a basic thing. antenna situation is a 40/20m linked dipole rolled up in a bag that i can throw up pretty quick.

the thing i wasn't prepared for was how much the cable management situation matters. everything kind of worked on my bench but when i actually tried to set it up in a hurry in my backyard it took forever to figure out which cable went where. thinking about labeling everything with colored tape but curious if anyone has a better system for that. also wondering if i'm missing anything obvious that i'd regret not having at an actual deployment.

the cable labeling thing is so real, i went through the exact same frustration. what i ended up doing was using those little brady label maker labels on both ends of every cable so you always know what connects to what without tracing the whole thing. color coded velcro straps too, red for power cables, black for coax, just something visual you can grab fast when youre stressed.

one thing i'd add to your kit if you dont already have it is a laminated quick-start card. like literally just a single page you made yourself that says step 1, step 2, in the order you actually set it up. sounds dumb but when you're at a real deployment at 2am or in the middle of something stressful your brain doesn't always work the same as when you're relaxed on the bench. i've watched very experienced ops fumble around because they just forgot their own setup order under pressure.

your kit sounds solid honestly. the linked dipole is a good call, way more flexible than a lot of people give it credit for. only thing i might suggest is thinking about a small headlamp in there and maybe a short extension cord or power strip, you'd be surprised how often there's one outlet in a weird spot at an EOC.

im kind of in the same boat as you were, still haven't put mine together yet, so this is actually really helpful to read. quick question though — did you do anything special to keep the battery from draining just sitting in the case between uses? thats one thing ive been worried about, like if something happens and i grab the kit and the battery is dead thats kind of the whole problem.
