first WWFF activation - didnt really know what i was doing but it worked out

 Loading...

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, been meaning to try it for ages after reading about it here and on the POTA forums. decided to head out to a local nature reserve that was already in the KFF database and just see how it went. i brought the FT-891 and my end fed halfwave up in a tree, pretty standard setup for me at this point.

honestly i wasnt 100% sure about the logging requirements going in, i kind of just read the rules once and figured id work it out. ended up with 47 QSOs over about 2.5 hours mostly on 40m with a few on 20m, and i think that counts as a valid activation? the WWFF website says 44 minimum QSOs which i only found out after i got home and panicked a bit before counting again and realizing i was fine lol. the nature reference number for logging caught me off guard too, i kept second guessing which field to put things in on HAMRS.

but yeah it was a really nice day out, the reserve was beautiful, saw some kind of hawk circling while i was operating which felt very on brand. anyone else done activations in the same area or have tips for uploading logs to the WWFF database? ive looked at the site and its a little confusing compared to POTA.

congrats on your first one, 47 QSOs is a solid first activation. the log upload on the WWFF side can be a bit clunky compared to POTA yeah, what i usually do is export the ADIF from whatever logging app i used and then just make sure the KFF reference is in there correctly before uploading. the website will usually flag errors if something doesnt look right. one thing to double check is that your QSO date and times are in UTC and not local time, caught me out on my second activation and i had to resubmit.

also if you're doing references that are also in POTA (a lot of KFF parks overlap with KFF POTA refs) you can often upload to both programs with the same log which is nice. keep at it, some of the nature reserves have really good propagation spots if you can find a clearing.

hawk watching you while you operate is honestly the dream. i did one activation last fall at a wildlife area and had a whole family of deer just kind of hanging around about 30 feet away the whole time, didnt seem bothered at all by the radio stuff. made the whole thing feel worth it even when 40m was being difficult that day. WWFF has a nice vibe to it, more relaxed than some of the contest-y feeling stuff. welcome to the addiction i guess
