anyone else do the weekly nets or is it just me talking to myself out there

 Loading...

so ive been checking into the Tuesday night 2m net through our local club for about 3 months now and honestly its become one of my favorite parts of the hobby. started doing it mostly cause the elmer who helped me get licensed kept bugging me to try it and im really glad he did. theres something kind of weirdly comforting about knowing every week at 7:30 theres gonna be a bunch of people on frequency just... talking and checking in.

anyway i heard there's a big special event station coming up for some kind of anniversary and i have no idea how those work. like do you just call them like a normal QSO or is there some kind of procedure? also does anyone know a good place to find net schedules because i feel like im missing stuff that goes on outside my immediate area. tried googling it but kept getting old pages that havent been updated since like 2015 or something.

special event stations are super easy, honestly easier than you'd think. you just listen for them calling CQ or look them up on a spotting network if you're into that, then call them just like any other station. a lot of times they're set up specifically to hand out contacts so they want to work as many people as possible. some of them offer a certificate or QSL card if you send in a log extract after, which is kind of a fun thing to collect.

for finding nets, the ARRL has a net directory but i'll be honest its a bit clunky to navigate. a lot of people just ask around on local repeaters or in their regional groups. your club probably has a list too they just never think to hand it out to new members. worth asking whoever runs the tuesday net cause they usually know whats going on in the area better than any website.

oh man I was totally the same way when i first started checking into nets, felt kinda awkward just saying my callsign and signal report and then that was it lol. but yeah it grows on you. there's an HF net i stumbled into a few months ago on 40m that runs sunday mornings and its way more relaxed, people actually have conversations instead of just rapid fire check-ins. might be worth looking into once you get your general if you're not there already.
