modded my IC-7300 for better audio and a few other things — worth it?

 Loading...

so ive been sitting on this idea for a while and finally pulled the trigger on a few mods for the 7300. first thing i did was the rx filter swap, put in a tighter 500hz filter for CW work and honestly the difference is noticeable, less garbage getting through on a crowded band. also did the standard fan mod where you replace the stock fan with a quieter noctua one, which sounds like a minor thing but when youre doing digital modes for hours the constant whirring was driving me nuts.

the audio mod is what im most curious about getting feedback on. i pulled the internal speaker and replaced it with a small aftermarket one, added a tiny bit of capacitance to smooth out the low end. it actually sounds warmer now? hard to describe but received audio is less tinny. not sure if thats placebo or real but my ears say its better.

has anyone else gone down this rabbit hole with the 7300 or any other radio. wondering if theres mods i havent thought of yet, particularly around the PA section or the front end for better dynamic range on crowded bands.

the fan mod alone is worth it imo. i did mine about two years ago and cant imagine going back. noctua fans are overkill in the best possible way, thing runs cool and quiet now. i used a pwm adapter so the speed still ramps up under load which is nice.

on the audio side i think youre hearing a real difference, not placebo. the stock speaker in that radio is genuinely mediocre, icom kind of phoned it in there. some guys do the whole external speaker route but if youre doing internal replacement thats a cleaner solution. i went the opposite direction and just plugged into a little external monitor speaker i had sitting around, works great but the cable management is annoying.

for front end stuff ive seen some people add a preamp bypass relay for strong signal environments, basically let you switch out the preamp on 40m and 80m when the band is loud and it gets a little less intermodulation. never did it myself but the thread on eham a while back seemed legit. might be worth digging up.

yeah the 7300 mods scene is pretty active. one thing i havent seen you mention is the rf connector mod, some guys replace the stock SO-239 with a higher quality N connector or at least a better grade UHF connector. marginal difference at HF frequencies honestly but if youre doing any 6m or upper HF it does matter more. mostly its just a peace of mind thing for me.

also if you havent looked into the TCXO upgrade thats worth considering depending on what youre doing. the stock oscillator drift isnt terrible but for FT8 or any narrow digital work the improved frequency stability is nice. i think Icom actually sells an official TCXO option for some of their radios but im not 100% sure on the 7300 specifically, might need to check the service manual.
