First POTA activation didn't go as planned but I think I get it now

 Loading...

So I finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house, K-4829 if anyone knows it, and honestly it was kind of a mess but also really fun? I brought my KX2 and a end-fed half wave that I usually just toss up in the backyard and it worked fine at home but out in the field stringing it up in trees I realized I had no idea what I was doing with antenna placement. Spent like 25 minutes just getting it up and by then I was kind of flustered.

Anyway I only made 14 contacts in about an hour and a half which I know is not enough to count as a valid activation so I didnt even get to log it. Got on 40m and called CQ POTA for a while and got a few hunters coming back but then the frequency got busy and I kind of lost confidence and just started S&P which was probably the wrong move. I think my main problem was not having a real system, like I just showed up with gear and hoped for the road.

Anyone have tips for making those first 10 contacts faster? And is there a good way to spot yourself if youre solo and dont have cell service at the park? I saw something about the POTA app but wasnt sure if it works offline or needs data.

14 contacts and you learned a ton, that's honestly a successful trip even if the log doesn't count officially. Don't sweat the 10 contact minimum too much, it clicks once you've done a few of these.

For spotting yourself without cell service — yeah that's a real issue at a lot of parks. What a lot of people do is set up their spot before they leave the parking lot while they still have signal, just put in an approximate time and your frequency, then head in. You can also use APRS to self-spot if your radio supports it or you have a TH-D74 or something like that. Some guys bring a cheap prepaid data SIM on a different carrier just for spotting, Verizon vs ATT coverage varies so much park to park.

On the 40m thing — if a frequency gets busy dont abandon it right away, try going up or down 5 kHz and calling again. And honestly just calling CQ POTA consistently for 10-15 minutes without stopping is way more effective than most new activators expect. The hunters are out there, they just need to find you.

oh man i had the exact same experience on my first one lol. i also brought an endfed and had no idea how much the takeoff angle changes depending on how you hang it. i ended up with like one end like 4 feet off the ground and was wondering why i was getting such patchy results

the POTA app does need data for spotting but there's also the website and if you have wifi calling enabled on your phone sometimes that works in weird places. honestly just telling someone on a local club frequency that youre activating and asking them to spot you on the cluster works too, i did that for my first couple until i figured out the self-spotting thing
